Boycott BP
Here's how you do it. Here's how you send BP a message.

Reduce your consumption of gasoline as much as you can, and then cut another 10%.

1. BP? BP? Oh, you mean that company ...

4. Good luck making a dent they will notice
let me explain why... the gas you buy at AM\PM or BP stations is a very small part of the business.

The gas I buy at the Exchange or another gas station may very well come from a well drilled by BP.

The size of this is not exactly Coldstone Creamery

6. We've tried before
there is so much oil that goes into everything we use that it is not even funny.

We need to reduce it to zero, but that means we need a STRUCTURAL and SOCIETAL changes.

I mean all those plastics you get every day come from oil. The pesticides for your food, oil, we use oil based fertilizers as well... oh the pain at home, the carpeting. I could go on, and on and on. It is far more complex than just not stopping at the gas station. For the record, I wish it were.

7. Yeah, sure
We can't do it. BS.

Cut back on buying gas if you want to send a message that you are pissed about this situation.

If you don't, just keep making excuses.

Edited on Mon May-03-10 07:29 PM by BeFree
are you ignorant of?

Reduce gas consumption, doesn't mean don't eat food.

13. Been there, done that, got the T-SHIRT
but in reality my effect, given how far spread they are... is nothing.

But if it makes you happy, go for it.

By the way, been on that reduce thingy for YEARS now...

11. I keep trying to tell people on DU that we are immersed in oil.
Making little changes is like the amount of a drop in a bucket. Can it be done? Can we move away from it? Yeah, but it is going to take a huge overhaul. It is not a snap your fingers kind of thing.
That being said, I found some good things to try to avoid petroleum based products:

Step 1
According to the National Candle Association, 70% of US households purchase and burn candles. Parrafin wax is a petroleum based product, and is used to produce the majority of these candles. Choosing alternatives such as 100% beeswax or soy based candles not only decreases our dependency on petroleum, but improves indoor air quality and often helps to support local businesses.

Step 2
Huge numbers of cosmetics are petroleum based, including lip gloss, face powder, nail polish, and many more. Use of these products, besides increasing our dependency of foreign petroleum, also means covering our skin with carcinogenic chemicals. Opting for natural, non-toxic alternatives is easy and will allow your skin to breathe better, which means restoring your natural glow rather than applying it each morning. EVO.com is a comparison shopping engine that allows you to search for petroleum free beauty products.

Step 3
Avoiding petroleum based products is not always easy, particularly in the case of plastics. While corn based bio plastics do exist, and a number of products utilizing this new technology can be found if you do your homework, bio plastics are still a long way from becoming a mainstream alternative. However, there are some simple steps you can take in reducing dependence on petroleum that will not disrupt your daily life. Shopping with reusable canvas grocery bags is a simple but effective way to avoid petroleum based plastic bags, and investing in a stainless steel water bottle rather than disposable bottles can have a huge impact on your petroleum usage.
