The victims of oil spill are washing up on shore
Edited on Mon May-03-10 08:45 PM by thewiseguy

A dead grouper fish lays washed in by the tide in Waveland, Miss., Monday, May 3, 2010. The Mississippi gulf coast has seen more than usual dead marine life since the gulf oil spill began over a week ago.

They wait for oil. But the sea brings death instead

Kitchen sink gloves at the ready, Jackye Carroll, 62, patrolled the white-sand beach of Pass Christian yesterday looking for any sign of animal distress from the oil slick lurking over the horizon. Her vigilance soon paid off, though she was hardly pleased: a dead loggerhead turtle by the edge of the surf.

"I have been living here for 20 years," says Ms Carroll. "And I have never seen a single dead turtle on the beach." Pulling on the gloves as she had been instructed after volunteering for turtle-watch duty the day before, she dragged the turtle, about two feet in length, up the sand to where it would be collected.

11. ....
There is increasing recognition that wild, domestic, and companion animals may act as "sentinels" for environmental health hazards by providing early warning of human health hazards in the environment. Animals can act as sentinels because they may be more susceptible or have greater exposure to a particular hazard compared to humans living nearby.

Environmentalists, volunteers, the Coast Guard, Local-State-Federal gov't, etc will clean this up for years while BP will fight tooth and nail to avoid paying for their mistake.

22. As one of DU's greatest luminaries recently observed,
Edited on Mon May-03-10 10:46 PM by QC
for the president to advocate more offshore drilling was a stroke of genius because only Republican areas would suffer from the inevitable spills and other catastrophes.

I thought it was the most vile thing I have ever seen anyone post on this site, and I have been here for a very long time, but such moral squalor is now praised around here as "pragmatic," which seems to be the highest compliment one can bestow on anything. Who cares about trifles like turtles and pelicans when our team has a chance to score a point?

Check my profile and you will see that this issue is somewhat personal for me.

amazing to me, just amazing, how many here seem to think this is a all just a football or basketball game. Doesn't matter if all life is destroyed in the process, so long as the one scoring points wears your colors.

Laying low strikes me as a cowardly thing to do, as though it will all just "blow over." But perhaps that is what that poster is paid to do? Wouldn't surprise me...

Birds in Trouble

A number of species are prompting special concern, including the Brown Pelican — just removed from the Endangered Species List, and beach-nesting terns and gulls (Caspian Tern, Royal Tern, Sandwich Tern, Least Tern, Laughing Gull, Black Skimmer) and shorebirds (American Oystercatcher, Wilson's Plover, Snowy Plover).

The coastal Reddish Egret, large wading birds (Roseate Spoonbill, Ibises, Herons, Egrets), and marsh birds (Mottled Duck, Clapper Rail, Black Rail, Seaside Sparrow, Marsh-Dwelling Songbirds) are all threatened as well.

Already, ocean-dwelling birds may be affected, like the Magnificent Frigatebird, should they come in contact with the oil.

Migratory shorebirds (plovers, sandpipers and relatives) and migratory songbirds (warblers, orioles, buntings, flycatchers, swallows, and others) may find their landing places despoiled by oil.
