Slain D.C. principal met killers on sex chatline

Been following this local story, here's an update to the case

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/local/Police_-Slain-D_C_-principal-met-killers-on-sex-chatline-92725564.html

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/crime-scene/montgomery/post.html

Two men have been charged with murder and a third man is in custody in the slaying of D.C. principal Brian Betts, Montgomery County police said Monday evening.

Police Chief Thomas Manger said Betts met one or more of the suspects on a telephone chat line he described as a "sex chat line" or a "social networking chat line."

Sharif Tau Lancaster, 18, of Northwest Washington, and Alante Saunders, also 18, of no fixed address, have been charged with murder, Manger said. The third man has not yet been charged and Manger did not release his name.

The murder arrests came after authorities on Monday morning charged a 46-year-old District woman with using Betts's credit card. Lancaster is that woman's son, the source said.

Artura Otey Williams, of the 5300 block of 5th Street NW is charged with two counts of knowingly receiving a stolen credit card with the intent to use it, attempted theft less than $1,000 in value, and attempted fraudulent credit card use, police said. She is currently being held in Washington, D.C. awaiting extradition to Montgomery County.

1. When I heard this today, I felt awful for the guy's memory
He was beloved. Making public that he was using a sex chat line just serves to bring him down in the eyes of the kids who admired him.

The fucking punks who killed him deserve to be shamed, not this poor man, in death.

2. He certainly didn't deserve to be murdered
But a principal shouldn't be hooking up on a sex chat line.

4. Seriously ..... why not?
Should a single principal date? Should she date many men at once? Should he not date other men?

If this was a kiddie sex line or porn line or chat room where pervs cruise for kids, that's one thing. If chatting with other adults, why ought we care?

5. I'm with you, Stinky... what century are we living in any way?
A "sex" chat line with consenting adult participants, should not be considered inappropriate.. how's it any different than, say, a singles bar scene? The man's private life is not the crime here.

17. My God. You don't understand public school employees are held to a higher standard?
Teachers have had their careers ruined for far less than what this jerk did. And he was a jerk in the way he treated teachers and students.

22. Teachers contracts have morals clauses in them
I would assume the same is true of principals. And a morals clause would get a principal fired for participating on a sex chat line. That might seem unfair but this man did sign that contract. I don't believe he was forced to do so.

9. No, it wasn't kiddie porn...
but he did try to hook up with teenagers, and he had teenage students. There's a stickiness there.

I know this can be pushed to ridiculous reductions of logic, such as, "a professor who has forty-year-old students shouldn't date forty-year-olds," but this situation is questionable. To some degree we choose what we find attractive in other people, and to some degree we don't.

I'm too tired to form a clear and meaningful statement at this moment, so I'm just going to throw this out there and accept the kicks, punches, slaps, and general beating I've invited.

14. well, he was a middle-school principal, not a high-school principal
So the ages of his students were well below the young-but-legal people he was trying to meet; I respectfully disagree that there was any stickiness about his interests.

I agree, if he'd been on a chat line with younger teenagers, it'd be creepy, but from what (very) little I've read, it looks like he wasn't doing anything that approached being illegal.

And if that's true and he was staying away from the age group that was in his charge, it's a real shame that this was ever exposed. Not that it's wrong--it's an essential part of the investigation--but it's just sad.

16. Legality has nothing to do with it. Principals are SUPPOSED to be held to a higher standard
There are LOTS of arrogant jerks who are school administrators; unfortunately, this one got caught.

18. Yep. And teachers have had their licenses REVOKED for the same
or similar things.

This was a PUBLIC SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR. There are different standards here from the public at large.

15. Exactly. He was one of Rhee's darlings
When I read the WP's articles about him and his hardnosed attitude towards teachers and students, I figured something the hell was screwed up about him. Now we know.

I am sorry he's dead, but he took a hell of a risk doing what he did.

12. The AP covered that part of the story
Their report was that he met them on a sex chat Internet forum and invited them to his house. I heard it on the radio this morning or I'd post a link.

..... than some others have shown him.

20. It's disrespectful to report he was murdered by people he met on a sex chat site?
And invited to his house?

I don't understand how that is disrespectful.

I am sorry he's dead, but I figured some really unsavory stuff was going to come out about him.
