Just dig down to where the temperatures and pressures are enormous and tap UNLIMITED ENERGY! What could possibly go wrong?!

Doomsday, that's what.

As we've been hearing, if they can't stop BP's Gulf oil leak - and it's possible they won't be able to given the enormous pressures down there - the oil could poison the whole planet's oceans, killing off most of the plant life that supplies us with oxygen and asphyxiating the whole planet. This is the problem with digging so deep where the temperatures and pressures test the limits of our technology and where we are playing Russian roulette.

It's deja vu time....

If it isn't fixed we really are doomed.

to prevent disasters like this! It's all the fault of the Dermacrits! Drill baby drill!

5. Steve Simels reminds us it's coming out on DVD.

Prescient stuff, obviously, and more than a little depressing, even terrifying, given that there is currently chatter that theoretically sane people believe the Gulf oil gusher may have be to nuked before the crisis is over.

In any case, Crack in the World has never been on DVD, but a restored widescreen version is due July 27; you can pre-order it over here...

...if there's still time........!!!!!!!!!!

6. The math says that, given how much water there is in the ocean, and the present rate of leakage
we only have thousands of years left.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=8259665&mesg_id=8263548

This is bad enough without the hyperbole.

7. that math stops at 200,000 gallons per day? why?

the worst case scenario includes a total blowout which makes it 2.1 million gallons per day.

and why are you thinking that every drop has to be poisoned, id say even 1/3 would at least bring our civilization down.

9. "that math stops at 200,000 gallons per day? why?"
Because the poster did the calculations based on the estimated rate of oil flow.

Sure, I suppose a total blowout could happen at some point.

Even at 2.1 million gallons a day it would take years to poison a third of the ocean.

That gives years in which to drill new wells to relieve the pressure and years in which to fabricate, test, and deploy a containment/collection device.

13. Don't be ridiculous. The whole Gulf is getting poisoned right now.

And the pollution is already threatening to seep out of the Gulf.

The whole ecosystem in the Gulf is under assault because of this "minor" little oil industry boo-boo.

22. Who are you quoting as describing this as a minor accident?
Edited on Tue May-04-10 07:40 PM by MilesColtrane
Because I didn't say it.

My point is that there's a little bit of a difference between a major accident and the death of the planet and human civilization.

This FEELS like it's going to doom all of earth's oceans. All three of them. I can tell from the auras and from having seen quite a few apocalypses in my day.

17. Drilling in the middle of circulating ocean water is about as dumb as putting a nuclear reactor on
a moving vehicle and then painting a bull's eye on it for the enemy to use as a target, i.e., nuclear-powered warships. Insane.

And they are going to try to stop the leak on Thursday, using a technology that has never been tried at that depth.

Translation:

Last chance to get your shotgun and a year's supply of canned goods before civilization comes to an end.

are not in danger of dying off...not for another 900 plus years (given the current rate of leakage). That is not to say we don't have a catastrophe on our hands...just not the End of the World as we know it.

20. And another report said the opposite. That it only takes a small amount of oil to poison

a lot of ocean water and they did the math and came out with a doomsday scenario.

21. It's one of my favorite late night classic sci-fi flicks.
The good guy does all he can, including going over his boss's head, to stop the madness. Although they listen to him and try to stop the process, it's too late to prevent disaster on a global scale...

I may just pop it in tonight.

23. I once read a nuclear power executive admitting nuke power was a huge risk

but worth it since we have to take risks blah blah.

Look at it this way. If the world comes to an end, we can always start life on another planet. SOMEBODY'S got to take risks for money.
