Where Did the "Promise Keepers" Go? |
|
A few years back the "Promise Keepers" were newsmakers, but they seem to have disappeared. They'd meet 40,000 strong in stadiums across the country and pledge to be exemplary Christians. They also vowed to be the heads of their household, and they didn't believe in allowing women to preach.
They're gone. Is this the same group that accepts their daughters' purity pledges?

2. Various "masculine Christianity" movements mostly. |
|
Promise Keepers ran out of money. Apparently all those stadium rallies cost more money than they were making back on books and tshirts. They've limped along since, but really haven't done anything since the mid-90's because they haven't had the funds to regain their past momentum.
There are a lot of smaller groups with the same pitch preaching patriarchy and biblical literalism for manly father figures or boys who want to be manly father figures once their balls drop.

7. They started out making money hand over fist |
|
Because they charged a hefty admission ($40.00, IIRC) to their events. Their leaders got called on it, went to the free admission business model - and burned through most of the cash. I know several guys who went - they seemed to enjoy it, did'nt seem to have rabies or nuthin'. I did'nt think there was anything wrong with their original model, which was an honest premise - but I would'nt go if they paid me!

And what a pompous, self-righteous schmuck he is. He has an "I love my wife" bumper sticker that he got at a promise keepers event. This guy is poison. Ever since he came on board he has worn his religion on his sleeve, has been a catalyst for divisiveness on the team. With him I definitely follow the sage advice, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

13. What a joke that was. |
|
I read an article about it once and recognized the name of the person interviewed. He was the developer of the final phase of my community. He said that society puts such demands on men to be the dominant force in their family and business life that it just felt good to get away from those pressures and allow God to take over.
God is my dominatrix. I think that was the gist of it.

16. I had the creepy pleasure of knowing two of those idiots... |
|
both cheated on their wives. And both were surprised that their respective wifes were pissed at them.
it was a big boys club of closeted homophobes and serial cheaters.
one of the two guys, I worked with him. I asked him, why do you need to go to a big stadium and profess publicly to staying true to your wife and make a public showing that you are a christian?
His response and I quote, "because if you don't say it in public, the guilt won't work".
I blinked and, I think, I went a little slack jawed at his response.
"so", I responded, "you don't trust yourself to be with your own thoughts?"
He got a very confused look on his face, started to say something, thought better of it. Then walked away with a look of deep thought on his face.
They were children trying to play act at being adults.

17. I haven't heard of them in about 12 years |
|
I used to have an extremely fundamentalist xtian boss who would try to push his agenda upon the 2 employees he had which included me.
He was not totally out in the open about doing it but always made sneaky remarks about being christian without truly crossing the legal line. I remember how he tried to have me look into promise keepers and I was rather astounded at how subservient the female was supposed to be. I just didn't think that happened in modern times. You have to realize that I had just moved from liberal CT to a borderline bible belt-like eastern WA location. I had never been exposed to real over the top bible belt behaviors so it was all new to me.

I always found that ironic because the University of Colorado is located in Boulder, which is a very secular/atheist place.
