Frustrated sigh........
from thinkprogress:

Poll: Majority of Americans approve of Arizona law that they believe will result in racial profiling.

The new anti-immigrant Arizona law allows law enforcement officials to engage in a dragnet against people suspected of looking like undocumented immigrants. The law had to be amended because its original version was almost certainly unconstitutional. The revised law authorizes local and state law enforcement authorities — including the campus police — “to question those they suspect to be illegal immigrants and ask that they produce verification of their status.” A new NYT/CBS poll shows that “the public broadly agrees that the Arizona law will result in racial profiling, overburden local and state law enforcement agencies, and decrease illegal immigrants’ willingness to report crimes for fear of deportation.” Nevertheless, a slim majority of Americans still supports it: http://thinkprogress.org/2010/05/03/poll-az-racial/

The poll also finds that a majority of Americans believe the nation’s immigration laws need to be “seriously overhauled” by the federal government.

1. I'm guessing it's the same people that voted for
GWB twice, which pretty much explains it.

2. Old West Wing schtick
Josh goes wandering around repeating the results of a survey that found that 86% of Americans thought that too much was spent on foreign aid, and 79% though the foreign aid should be cut. He repeats is about a half dozen times through the episode when Donna finally asks him why it bothers him so much. His reply is the observation that apparently there were 7% of Americans who thought that the budget was too high, but SHOULDN'T be cut.

Surveys are useful, but they aren't really completely self sufficient. In fact, if you ask the folks that write truly professional surveys, you'll find that respondents are rarely self consistent. I tried filling one out on a new car I had bought. There were maybe 40 questions spread through the thing. But you could see that it was hard to fill out and stay consistent. There's what the survey wants to ask, and there is what the respondent wants to say, and the two may not align well.

3. IMO one more sign of a broken government. Hostile band-aids than fixing the
problem. Immigration reform has been bantered about for decades now with no effective solutions than to use illegal immigrants for cheap labor with minimal corp. accountability. The root cause is never fixed so zillions of people looking for a better life suffer. Again, this country is its own worst enemy. Never proactive solutions, just reactionary knee jerks.

4. Any bet on the racial makeup of that 51%?
And where they get their 'news'?
