Some observers noted that the image on the pin is similar to a version on the Virginia flag from the era that included the state's secession from the Union in 1861.

In Monday's statement, Cuccinelli said he took the image from an "antique state flag that hangs in the Virginia Capitol."

"I liked this particular image and thought it would be something unique for my employees," he said. "I cannot believe that joking with my staff about Virtue being a little more 'virtuous' in this antique version has become news."

Quite disingenuous to refer to a Confederate infantry flag as "an antique state flag" whose "particular" image he liked.
So the REAL news is that the Attorney General of Virginia gives as gifts nice little secret Confederate infantry flag pins to his staffers. Gee, that makes me feel good. Maybe he wants to celebrate Confederate History Month all year long. See below.

Seriously, what the heck is going on in Virginia? Cuccinelli also just subpoenaed UVA for all materials related to climatology studies by a former professor.

5. Ties in nicely with "Confederate History Month"
Now that it's May, I think I'll take a drive around and see if any of the teabaggers in my neighborhood are still flying their "stars & bars".

In Virginia you don't have to register to a party.

In a continuation Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos", all the Republicans went out and voted for Cree Deeds (the most un-electable Democrat) in the primary. He won in a landslide.

VA governors serve for five years. This time the election fell in an off year (2009). Barely a million voters turned out in the whole state.

Virginia is now getting what it deserves. Hopefully all the sane people will not have fled the state by the time the next election rolls around.

7. Well, I definitely do not see Virginia in my long range plans
with this kind of governance. Cuccinelli is trying to block healthcare, turn over EPA greenhouse gas findings, witch hunting the climate professor, etc. etc. I think there may be an exodus of the saner elements by the next election. I can't believe what is happening here.

I think it's interesting that almost all the focus on the lapel pin has been on the Ashcroft prudery and not on the fact that it's based on a seccessionist flag. Imagine the entire staff of the Attorney General's office being adorned with Confederacy "flair"! Innocent faux pas or something worse?

9. It's noted but glossed over in the Virginian Pilot article
I wouldn't say that I caught it since in the Virginian Pilot article it specifically says

"Some observers noted that the image on the pin is similar to a version on the Virginia flag from the era that included the state's secession from the Union in 1861."

BUT, it isn't "similar", it's exactly the same. It was very easy to google Virginia Flag 1861 and find out exactly WHICH Virginia flag from 1861. And I haven't seen any follow-up questions to Cuccinelli about the appropriateness of him decking his staffers out in Confederate War regalia - like I said, everyone is focused on him not being able to see a breast without swooning.

The Cooch is a flat-out whack job, and he seems determined to find new ways to demonstrate that on a daily bsais.

12. Evening kick
This story should be paid more attention to.

The Virginia Attorney General paid privately for label pins for his staff that reproduced a secessionist Civil War infantry flag. Why?
