Question on the oil containment devices
Take a look at the riser pipe. There are 3 leaks and each container will be place on one of them. The riser pipe is connected. What will happen to the pipe when the containers are placed? Will it sever the pipe or what? If so, why do they need 3 of them? Confused by the logistics...

1. No idea.
No, I don't think it will sever the pipe. Its really thick

Its possible they will put them down and concrete around the outside of them to fill in all the gaps and seal with the bottom. To do this, theyll have to leave top open to release pressure buildup. Once concrete sets, they can start sucking out the top.

That makes most sense to me. No way to get airtight seal without pouring.

3. The are essentially setting a box over top of the open pipe. Then they will
pump the oil from box to containment ships on the surface. Three open pipes, three boxes. Oil can still leak out of the bottom of the box, but if they pump fast enough it won't. At any rate, it will spill less than the 200k gallon figure we keep hearing. If it works.

4. Containment vessels expected to contain 85% if they work at all... n/t

6. The containment systems I design catch 105%. Of course I'm
not designing objects for operation at 1 mile under the sea. ;-)

5. I don't know. It does seem that smooshing down the pipe
with a concrete weight at or before the leak closest to the well would be all that's needed. But I know nothing about stopping oil leaks. Sadly neither does BP. Every measure they've tried so far has failed.

Thank you for posting this diagram.

8. No way. Not with the pressures involved. You can press down a garden hose
but you wouldn't be able to press down a fire hose to stop the flow.

9. So what was the talk about concrete?
Is that simply to secure a container in place over each leak on the riser pipe?

11. Now they are talking about a "giant dome"
made of concrete and steel, to be placed over the leak today. There are now only 2 leaks in the riser pipe, the 3rd one having been plugged last night.
