Oakland police chase and gun down 'Bambi'
Oakland police chase and gun down 'Bambi'

Residents of an East Oakland neighborhood are upset after Oakland police killed a wayward deer over the weekend.

On Saturday morning, an officer spotted the young deer that had wandered into the area and chased it in his patrol car. The deer jumped over a fence and into the backyard of Kim McLemore' house on 90th avenue.

Police evacuated the area and, under orders to "dispatch the deer," shot it seven times before it died. Animal control officers were also on the scene.

Officials said the deer was gunned down because "it was acting disoriented in an urban environment." Holly Joshie from the Oakland Police Department also said, "There were many children and area residents and the officers did make a decision that the deer was a public safety issue."

--------------------------------

Weems and other residents believed the killing was unnecessary. "They didn't have to do that," said McLemore. "They could have figured something else out, right?"

According to Susan Heckly of the Lindsay Wildlife Center, they could have tranquilized the deer or set it free.

But officers from OPD and animal control are not trained to use tranquilizers on animals, reports KTVU.

"We are going to review this procedure and in the future we really are going to come up with something else. There has to be a better way to handle this situation," said Joshie.

1. Seven shots, huh, doubtless the deer was killed right away...a lot of needless
suffering because these cops are assholes.

23. Yup --
Ain't it the truth! :hi: I mean just how damned dumb/disconected do you have to be to think that shooting a cowerng animal is the only answer to that problem?? We had Fish and Game shoot and kill a coyote here in Golden Gate Park a while back -- folks were outraged that that was resorted to to remove the animal and not other, non-lethal means.

Everybody's gotta be Rambo these days, going in guns a blazin' and not using their heads to find a creative solution.

14. that was fun
there are several different videos up - i watched 3 of them.

here in NC deer are all over the place. if people shot every deer that got in their lawn the population would be decimated. this was horrible and unnecessary imo.

17. On the video on the local newscast
Edited on Tue May-04-10 02:57 PM by Morning Dew
it looked like people held the front door open and the deer just walked in the restaurant - not sure what they crashed through, maybe an inner door?

On edit, it was the inner entryway that the deer just ran through - they crashed through the front door.

6. Acting disoriented in an urban environment, well d'uh!
Of course it was disoriented, it comes from the woods. What, you expect it to hop on board a bus and head for Northern California?

If it was in a fenced backyard, it would have been easy to net it or tranq it. The fact that they didn't call in Animal Control, you know, the experts, just goes to show that the only thing they had on their mind was killing this poor animal.

Fucking idiots couldn't even do a clean kill:grr:

10. And today here in So. Cal. (Oxnard)
They tranquillized a California Black Bear and removed it safely and gently from a tree.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/04/tranqualized-bear-removed_n_562926.html

"Fire crews on Tuesday morning were working to rescue a bear that ran around a Ventura County neighborhood for hours before climbing a tree at a cemetery and taking a long nap.

The 200-pound bear was partially tranquilized and had at least three darts stuck in its side when it fell asleep about 25-feet up in the tree, wedged in branches."

31. Actually deer don't do very good tranquilized
Saw that on one of the Animal Cops shows on Animal Planet a couple of years back. They stated when they had a tranquilize a deer that many die and the one they tranquilized in fact didn't survive.

Still I think it would've been better in this instance to try instead of the cops shooting it.

BTW, 7 shots - wonder about their marksmanship.

34. He had a pinecone that was mistaken for a gun in low light.
It's all the deer's fault. He could have followed the officers' orders instead of being all panicked and jumpy.
