2. Well
Look at it this way.. the oil spill was a disaster... big disaster, but it's not a common occurrence. One incident shouldn't make anyone change their mind.

Think of a plane crash... if a plane crashes somewhere, should we NOT fly anymore?

11. That analogy may not be appropriate.
As I understand it, spills happen constantly at these installations.

This one is huge and is being reported.

The smaller ones don't get this much attention.

12. Good Lord
How can anyone seriously compare it to a plane crash? Does a plane crash destroy local industries for years? Does it take away the livelihood of people who've fished for generations? Does it foul beaches and destroy tourism? Does it cause billions of dollars in economic losses?

14. Bad analogy
Drilling for oil at such high pressures is kind of like flying a plane through a plume of volcanic ash. Once you know that a plume of volcanic ash is likely to take down a plane, you don't keep flying through plumes of volcanic ash.

Similarly, once you realize that a mile of water and several miles of rock exert more pressure on oil than you can deal with, you should stop drilling for oil under several miles of water and rock.

18. That is a false analogy.
We have no idea how many oil spills there are every year because they do not get reported. And if there was any way that this could have been kept secret, it would have been.

When something is capable of doing the harm offshore drilling is capable of doing, iow, destroying the planets eco-system, it is a far different issue than a plane crash.

If your analogy were to work, we would not be worried about everyone having nukes either.

20. A plane crash doesn't devastate entire coastlines and ecosystems.
Lame comparison.

and it is still ~safely~ offshore. I suspect those numbers will change dramatically once the main body of the slick starts washing onshore.

I am also curious what the demographics of that survey are... especially where the people who voted yes live. My bet is that they are mostly far inland.

on edit: of only has one f :)

5. Guess that shows where the majority of CNN readers stand..which means nothing.
How may of them will be seeing oil wash up on the beaches near their homes?

7. "should the U.S. continue . . . " - that would include current drilling
I am sure some read it as "expanded" and some read it as keeping the status quo with respect to drilling.

A lousy question.
