Alabama football coach Nick Saban was at Kent State May 4th, 1970.
I remember him talking about this in the past -- maybe when he was at Michigan State or LSU.

Alabama's head coach reflects on that tragic day in an interesting column today by Mike Lopresti of USA Today. ...

"I'd never seen anybody shot before," Saban told the newspaper. "Even though I didn't see them shot, I saw them after they were shot. It's a horrible thing.

"There's not a May 4 that goes by that I don't think about it -- really think about it. Forty years seems like a long time. But it doesn't seem that long to me."

A defensive back, Saban went on to finish his collegiate career at Kent State. WIth his wife Terry still attending classes, Saban then stayed around campus and accepted his first coaching position as a KSU graduate assistant from 1972-74, eventually becoming a full-time KSU position coach.

4. I imagine he is the most high profile sports figure in the country that was actually
there, on campus, and near the shootings.
