John McCain has become a sad, pathetic caricature of himself.
The poor frustrated old bastard doesn't know whether to shit or go blind as he flails about wildly trying to position himself to the right of J. D. Hayworth (a task akin to trying to position oneself between Rush Limbaugh and a buffet line). Now our Johnny is furious that the alleged Times Square bomber was afforded his Miranda rights. Ummm, John, the guy is an American citizen. Trust me, Sparky, it's right there in the Constitution. (You know, assuming you took the same oath I did, that would be the thing that you swore to defend against all enemies.)
It's just sad. I don't care what you think about the old geezer, there was a time when he acted honorably while trying to survive almost unimaginable hardship. Now however, he will say anything, sacrifice any principle, and reverse any position, regardless of how long he has espoused it, in an attempt to hang on to his Senate seat.
I am reminded of the words of Sir Thomas More as directed to the perjurer, Richard Rich: "Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world ... but for Wales!?"
For Arizona, John? Really?

4. His public image has always been a lie. Privately, he is a terrble man, and I am
glad every time I see him he is not our president now.

That would have been our worst disaster of all.

5. McCain's Principles
<<...there was a time when he acted honorably while trying to survive almost unimaginable hardship.>>

Yeah, he would say anything, sacrifice any principle, and reverse any position, regardless of how long he has espoused it, in an attempt to survive. So he's reverting to his POW days, huh?

6. Well said Bravo. I noticed too that he is just going down hill. If you
watch him in a hearing for example, he just seems to be wondering around without a clue as to what is going on.

7. Perhaps John forgot "1966 Miranda vs Arizona"
that's right folks our Miranda rights originated from a case in Arizona.

The Republicans are screaming that they should strip him of his American citizenship that he gained in 2008. This is a slippery slope.....

so you start with folks that gained their citizenship through the process...

next step strip Americans born on American soil of their citizenship.....

The Republicans are ANTI - AMERICAN and the sooner people accept that the sooner we can move on.

8. I'm not sure his actions were all that "honorable" even then
Certainly McCain had the option of going home instead of remaining a POW, but had he done so he would have come home in disgrace. His career in the Navy would have been over or at the very least he would have never made flag rank, or even Captain and any political aspirations he may have had at the time would most certainly have gone down the toilet. McCain wasn't even presented with this option until several months into his captivity when his survival was pretty much assured. That's not to say that his service wasn't honorable, because it clearly was, but there's also plenty of examples of him being less than honorable before and since both in and out of military service.

12. I was referring solely to his time in Hoa Lo prison.

Before and after he was first a fuck-up, and later an unprincipled, angry jerk.
But as a POW ... try to touch your elbows behind your back. When you fail, find someone to encircle your arms in ropes and tighten them until your elbows meet against your spine. Then have them insert a bar between your arms and body, then lift you up and leave you hanging there for a bit. Let me know how long it takes you to say whatever your tormenters tell you to say. That's what McCain endured, and I doubt that I could have resisted as long as he did.
That is the ONLY time I am claiming that he acted honorably, (although I have no doubt that others will be along railing about other McCain issues, ignoring the thrust of the OP).

15. I'm not convinced
Whatever McCain did or didn't endure in the way of torture could just as easily been motivated by his own self interests as any dedication to God and country. Given his perennial self serving behavior, I find it hard to believe this one brief moment in history would have been any different. That's not to say he wasn't vigorously dedicated to his own cause, because clearly he has been.
