Small Luggage Explosion at Bush Airport
Small Luggage Explosion at Bush Airport

HOUSTON - A small explosion occurred in a piece of luggage at Bush Intercontinental Airport, according to officials. No injuries were reported.

Smoke was seen coming from the luggage shortly after it was unloaded off a jet around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Houston Airport System. The jet had just landed at the airport from Amsterdam.

Ground crews said they noticed something strange about a blue suitcase and were working to remove it when they heard a "pop" and smoke came pouring from it, according to an airport spokeswoman.

While no injuries were reported, several agencies, including the Houston Fire Department, were called to the scene.

6. There's a Bush Airport?
Not to minimize what could have happened if this thing had exploded in the air, but since when has there been a Bush Intercontinental Airport?

16. Hobby is a different airport in Houston. Intercontinental is the big one.
It used to be Houston Intercontinental (still is, to me).

20. We natives don't call it Bush or Intercontinental.
We call it Intergalactic.

I heard some silly DJ say that on the radio and thought it was the funniest thing ever.

The old airport on the SE side of town is William P. Hobby, named after a former Governor and owner of the Houston Post. It was built in the 40s and had to be refurbished to be the close-to-downtown airport that Southwest Airlines could use -- analagous to the Love Field situation in Dallas. TPTB wanted to close both Love Field and Hobby, and people wanted to use an old airport that wasn't so far from downtown. So Jim Wright, as Speaker, passed the Wright Amendment which enabled SW to use both of them since they were defined as short--hop to neighboring states airlines.

But I digress.

29. Intercontinental is still designated IAH by the FAA
And I haven't ever had to correct myself when I've called it Intercontinental. Some newbies to town might not know, but I'll educate 'em :)

32. Which makes me wonder why we bother having a different name.
If no one in town calls it 'Bush' can't we just officially rename it back to what it's supposed to be? Like The Summit?

10. UPDATE: NO explosion, probably deordorant.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6989527.html

Authorities have given the "all clear" after investigating this afternooon a suspicious piece of luggage coming off an international flight at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Despite initial reports of an explosion, one did not occur, said Houston Airport System spokeswoman Marlene McClinton.

Authorities had initially received a small aircraft emergency call around 2:15 p.m. for a bag on the tarmac near terminal D of the airport. An employee reported a small explosion and saw a mist expel from the bag, McClinton said. A hazardous materials team was dispatched to examine the bag, where crews determined it was not a danger.

The substance was most likely a personal care item, such as deodorant, that broke when it impacted with the ground, McClinton said.

"It was not an explosion," McClinton said. "When they were unloading the bag, they heard a pop when it landed on the ground … but it was a non event."

There were no reports of a fire, damage to property or injuries, according to authorities. "There (were) no disruptions to operations," McClinton said. "People on the plane continued as normal."

I automatically think worst case.

Though very technically it could be called an explosion... even if it didn't involve explosives.

11. Possibly something that didn't react well to an unpressurized
luggage compartment? Maybe wasn't smoke, but vapor of some kind.

18. There's a Bush airport, just like there's a Reagan airport.
I don't know a single soul in Houston who says Bush Airport. The two Houston airports are Intercontinental and Hobby. And that's just the way it is.

Oh, I guess Poppy and Babs call it "Bush" -- and Neil and Georgie and Marvin and Doro. That's probably it.
