4. Then he should demand that they rename California.
Hey, see whether he'd also demand renaming Coalinga in Southern California. (Although the name is pronounced like a Spanish name, it is an old railroad town that took the name from the English term "Coaling A."

6. Perhaps.
To a great extent you can predict ethnicity based on the claimed etymology.

Spanish speakers claim it, Native Americans claim it. Others claim it, as well.

Assigned by Spanish speakers. Might ultimately go back to a Spanish work of fiction, the name derived from another, older, work of non-Spanish origins but with at least one Arabic root. Then again, it might be Catalan.

Vexed nuisance, folk etymologies.

7. The iteration regardless of root is Spanish.
So changing that name to "Mexifornia" is redundant.

8. They don't understand quotation marks either.
They always use them for emphasis, not understanding the sarcastic connotation they carry. You know, like 'Obama is a "Muslim!" ' or something.

9. No Amensty!... er, No Amnety!... er, No Amesty!... hmmm...
They're slowly but surely zeroing in on it. Give them a few years.

(Even more worrisome -- the spellchecker just came back and said "no misspellings found" -- not even in the title!)
