I think the Times Square car bomb was designed to fail
I don't know why, but it just seems that he did everything wrong. Either he's really stupid or it was on purpose.

Who would benefit if that were the case? What possible motives could there have been?

I'm worried it might have been a distraction of sorts for
another, more serious attempt.

2. Too many things went wrong here
He's supposedly a registered democrat but he read for his Masters degree at Moonie university. Nothing adds up.
Maybe the plan was for him to escape to embarrass Obama et al.

4. I thought so too, at first...
for one thing, why call attention to it?

But then I thought, well maybe that was to maximize damage as people gathered around it...

Lots of unanswered questions here...

6. you don't have to actually blow things up to terrorize them
You just have to point out their vulnerability, especially if they've already experienced terror.

Several "unsuccessful" terror attempts have been made -- ones reeking of amateurity.

Someone wants to remind America to be scared.

8. Wacko defense possibility
"i was forced to do it by Al Qaeda, after I visited their camp out of curiosity.
I decided not to do anything violent, but they threatened my family so I made it look like I was doing their bidding, but rigged it so it wouldn't do damage. I love America."

9. Why wait around 50+ hours before escaping?
He's obviously educated...he had to know as soon as the bomb went bust that they'd be coming after him...in a big way.
