Now MSN is calling it "Fans Gone Wild"
Fans Gone Wild
Gallery: From Monday night's teen Tasering in Philly to Morganna the Kissing Bandit, there's a long (& sometimes scary) history of fans rushing the field.

I saw that picture today and just rolled my eyes-what an unprofessional hot head that cop is. Did he really think that he was alone and that that guy might *gasp* get away?

54. Right...
One idiot cop using a taser on a drunk asshole is exactly like the National Guard opening fire on protesters, killing 4 of them in a hail of bullets.

You can't seem to grasp the fact that not all bad things are equivalent. A drunk asshole being tased at a baseball game can be bad in it's own right without your drama, raising it to the level of the shootings at Kent State. Get some fucking perspective.

the thinking of those who applauded the attack on college students at Kent State --

There's no difference in that fundamental thinking.

And it's why the attack at Kent State wasn't sufficiently challenged.

Too many Americans were secretly applauding it!

And -- you're on ignore --

Yes, he should be arrested and fined. Tasing someone for this? What if the taser hit someone else? Did the potential for serious harm outweigh the crime here? Can someone be tased for jaywalking if they keep walking away from an officer?

There seem to be no limits to the use of this weapon.

18. I don't think he was drunk
If he was I think they would charge him for being drunk considering he is 17 and underage. However this could be considered "drunken behavior" even though he was sober. Again--I'm basing the fact that he is sober based on the fact that he wasn't charged for being drunk and he could have for any amount due to the fact that he is 17.

89. 17 year olds tend to be impulsive and don't always think about consequences
that's why military recruiters go after them so hard. It's also why car insurance rates don't drop until we're 25 and the part of the brain that says "Now that would be a dumb thing to do" is finally developed.

I'm sure there were very few of us who didn't do something incredibly stupid when we were young. This should be filed under "stupid kid tricks" - and it sure didn't warrant a violent, potentially lethal, response from security.

8. People do it all the time
the '96 series between the Yankees and the Braves was rife with people on the field. The cameras never showed it but I knew several people who were there. They said it was hilarious.

There is no reason to taser someone in that situation. Arrest him (that is partly why cops are there) and make him miss the game and pay a hefty fine.

The cop was wrong.

Edited on Wed May-05-10 08:06 AM by KharmaTrain
The kid was stupid for climbing on the field and making a total fool out of himself. Not something many of us haven't seen before...a minor distraction which has the entertainment value of the sausage race or guess the attendence.

I also think the security dude was massively stupid...this kid wasn't gonna be running around much longer until someone tackled him and dragged his sorry ass off the field. I honestly don't know what this fool was thinking or if this was the type of training he got. I thought tasers were to immobilize a real threat...someone with a weapon...not some goofy kid trying to play Ferris Bueler. Add to that you're doing this in front of a dozen TV cameras...not a smooth move, Lou.

Its common knowledge that people were shouting, "Tase him! Tase him!" And no one I've talked to gives a shit about the hairy manchild they busted last night (who wasn't even bright enough to take the bag of weed out of his pocket before he did it), nor do they care about the spoiled suburbanite who got a tiny little shock and almost fucked up a tied game.

You're seeing some massive psychological phenomenon when the only issue here is that people pay money to see a baseball game, not some fool dancing around the outfield or vomiting on a little girl.

Too many here see this as one event --

Imagine where we'd be now had they been able to use tasers during the civil

rights demonstrations to end Segregation --

NOT to suggest that there wasn't violence and intimidation aplenty!!

Or that being sprayed with fire hoses wasn't extremely painful and damaging!

And all of the stuff we didn't know at the time.

People applauding violence -- especially to teach someone a lesson is inane.

Remember Lincoln saying he would be in favor of hanging some soldier . . .

but he too well understood that even if it had the power to "teach him a lesson"

it would be too late cause he'd be dead!

Amazing how easy it is to teach a population to want to hit the trigger!!

Why should the cop or the people working security risk injury to themselves to stop this kid that decided to run on the field?

Their is risk to tasing, but I would rather the LEO risk injuring the guy causing the incident than risk injury to himself or the kids working security trying to tackle and detain the guy. You never know if his is going to fight back or maybe even pull a weapon once personal contact is made. Then it may be too late to prevent him from seriously injuring you or your co-workers.

50. What was the motivation behind destroying disco records?
Just because you don't like a certain style of music doesn't mean you should actively promote destroying it, how insecure and petty can you get by not letting other people appreciate their bliss without working to trash it?

I don't believe it was a coincidence that corporate supremacism took off as they worked to kill disco, I believe this was corporate media manipulation of American culture because disco; broke barriers, which corporate media product; Reagen would in due time work to buttress.

57. I don't think that was what that crowd was doing.
It was a PR baseball stunt that went waaaaay wrong. They never foresaw the crowd storming the field and creating the chaos they did. They picked disco because I think people either liked it or hated it.

I don't believe this was part of any concerted effort to destroy disco. I think any music that was picked would have created the same chaos. That was a baseball mess pure and simple. Any connection to the music industry and corporate plans was entirely incidental.

80. Just as an aside . . .

I think there was an organized effort to destroy disco --

it was taking the country in an entirely new direction -- in many different ways.

but mainly it was making old music NOT as valuable any more.

That meant a lot of loss of $$ for some!

85. The movie Airplane; which is one of my favorites, however in one scene I recall
Edited on Thu May-06-10 12:35 PM by Uncle Joe
this same frame being pushed when a Disc Jockey on a radio station announces "Disco lives forever!" just before the airplane wing knocks their tower down taking them off the air.

I thought it was a radio station/baseball stunt but honestly I've come to view major professional sports and the corporate media as having a symbiotic relationship.

58. This is beyond my understanding.
I live in a society which tasers teenagers who briefly interrupt certain games as a little teenage joke. So weird.

We have become a nation of torturers.

I am horrified by this thread.

63. We're talking about the application of very painful and potentially lethal force
People forget that the whole justification for police to get Tasers in the first place was to subdue potentially violent suspects in cases in the past in which they might have been tempted to use deadly force. But the notion that the cops would have pulled a gun and shot this guy is absurd, which means the rationale for tasing him is...what? There's something oddly funny about zapping a fellow human for some reason, but tell that to the families of those who've died:

Amnesty International in a report called "USA: Less than Lethal?" found that 334 people had died between 2001 and 2008 after being struck by Tasers.

Most of those deaths were attributed by authorities to other factors, such as drug use. But medical examiners concluded that Tasering caused at least 50 of the deaths.

Now what are the odds that someone who runs onto the field in the middle of a ballgame is a little blitzed?

Tasers should be limited to herding cattle.

76. Just noting what anyone else can see for themselves
Your posts on criminal justice matters right here on this board speak quite well to the point that we were making.

Not that you can see that- but then, that's also very much part of the point.

73. I assure you this demented pro-brutality mindset exists in many places.
Lots of "respectable" Brazilians are big fans of police brutality. There may be a slight difference in degree.

Catching the invader and wrestling him into the ground, although proven effective, won't give the psycho contingent their sadism fix.

And that's what it's all about. Punishment porn for the rotten-soul masses.
