Stars & Stripes letter: Holding Wolfowitz accountable
Holding Wolfowitz accountable

Adding insult to injury to the announcement that combat tours are being extended to 15 months, it was truly despicable to hear that the chief architect of the Iraq war and current World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz is suspected of supporting a massive pay raise for his girlfriend at the World Bank, Shaha Riza.

While coalition soldiers are asked to make incredible sacrifices in a war that Wolfowitz and his neoconservative ideologues predicted would be a grand success in 2003, he was allowed to walk away from his failure and assume the top position at an international organization committed to helping fight poverty and corruption.

Now Wolfowitz appears to have failed the world again as he supported a pay raise for this girlfriend that would make her higher paid than Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. While he has offered an apology, do we not live in a day and age where we expect more from our public figures and intellectuals? What kind of age is this where policymakers can send soldiers off to die in a complex war they mischaracterized, damage the prestige of the country we love, yet not be held in the least bit accountable?
