West Lafayette soldier killed in Iraq
By DAN SHAW

Weiss' mother, Judith, said her son was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. He had driven a Humvee during the first tour, although she wasn't sure if he was assigned the same job this time.

"Andy's one of those people that once he makes friends, he keeps them for life," Thompson said.

It was while they were in high school that Weiss met the girl who would eventually become his wife. They both worked at the Marsh Supermarket in West Lafayette. "They were high school sweethearts," Thompson said.

After graduation, Weiss took classes at Vincennes University, where he obtained a degree in building construction in 2000. Following that, he worked in a few construction jobs and then decided to join the military in late 2002. "I think Andy was looking for a purpose in life," he said. "And the military appealed to him."

The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, may have influenced Weiss' decision to join the Army. More important was his desire to provide for his family, Thompson said.

8. "...his desire to provide for his family."
That is perhaps the worst part of this death, and so many of the deaths. Not that these people weren't patriotic, but that they were forced into the meat grinder because they couldn't get a job that would support their family as an American civilian.

And the 22 percent, or whatever small percentage of the people still supporting Bush, are continuing to send their children to die, and aren't recognizing that this is the real reason they're dying. Not for the Giggling Murder Monkey, but to try to keep their wives and kids alive.

18. Reading the article, it sounded like he enjoyed the military.
"Thompson said Weiss had planned to turn his work in the military into a career. He had looked forward to a time when he could return to the Lafayette area and become a recruiter, Thompson said."

He obviously thought the military was not only career worthy, but wanted to become a recruiter for others.

I feel so sad for his wife and children.
