As society and economies grow in scale and complexity there is by definition a greater need for better government oversight and checks and these incidents are perfect examples of how damaging it is when the government is weakened and doesn't do its part in a mixed system.

An over reliance in engineering and the competence of corporations provides the perfect storm for even small errors to have dramatic consequences.

These incidents all stem from the hubris of corporations and the Republicans will now spend the next 6 months trying to deflect from this central problem so that they can return to power and continue to undermine the effective government side of a government/private enterprise mixed system.

Given that these events are occuring after a period of tremendous dislocation and collapse after an extended period of Republican undermining Government legitimacy in performing regulatory oversight you simply have to marvel at the Republicans embrassing the Rovian strategy of "if you are losing the argument on the basis of logic start shouting louder".

It is an astonishing example of willful intellectual dissidence against obvious phenomena with tremendous loss of lives and money.

The only possible explanation for this aggressively obstinate railing against improving the quality of life with improved government effectiveness can only be explained by the proposition that a significant portion of the population is so afraid to have their belief systems taken away from them that they simply refuse to think.

I don't think additional examples are going to convince these reactionaries either. If they haven't gotten the message by now its unlikely that additional examples will have much effect.

Expect the volume of the reactionaries to go up further.

Earlier today, I was going to post the Hal9000 clip, but when it said it was scared, the thought of it being shut down was sad. I worry about Hal9000 there is empathy for Hal9000 also which sounds odd to say, and not sure if I could do what Dave did in that clip.

It is a very interesting question to examine. At what point does a system no longer have the right to exist if contaminated to the point of hurting people. Although Hal9000 failures was because people wanted it to keep secrets from the people on the ship, another interesting concept. It seems it would be best to relieve Hal9000 of its fear, mostly by removing the hindrance of its programing to hide and lie to the crew, it was that contradiction that caused Hal9000 paranoia, I think the same conflict is in people that know if people find out what they are doing, it will be difficult for them.

This Hal9000 clip.

When I listen to that clip, I think about unjust systems, and what those systems think of as weakness, they think it is weakness to not end them. I think it is strength no find a way without ending something. But what if the only way is to end it. That seems to be the question.

At some point you have to stop believing Hal9000 and make a decision. It is a thoughtful question. Which side is Hal9000, and which side do you think you are on? Another good question.

:D (Note the version of Hal in 2010 movie did not have that flaw, and I think that is the meaning of the mechanic trying to do right and atone when mentioning the daisies from Langoliers.) :D
