Edited on Sat May-05-07 10:54 AM by Gloria
I just found out when I went to check out renewing my registration on line here in NM.......Note my bold:

***
If you have recently changed your address and have not notified the MVD, in writing of this change, do not continue with this on-line registration.

If you have recently changed your address and have not notified the MVD, in writing, but the correct address is listed on your "Registration Renewal Notice" with the following language "if the address below is correct please circle it" do not continue with this on-line registration. Please visit your local MVD office for assistance.
Please note the following:

MVD retrieves addresses from the National Change of Address data base.
Because of New Mexico statutory requirements, MVD is not able to change addresses without written notification from MVD customers.

***

Of course, in this day and age, it is perfectly logical...but it still struck me how creepy it sounded.....because it IS creepy!!!!

1. Yeah, it's that subversive Us Postal Service

Trying to keep track of where to send people's mail to.

It's been around for a long, long, long time.

Next conspiracy, please ...

2. didn't you ever notice
that when someone moves and has moved longer than 1 year, your mail to them comes back with their new address? Maybe you haven't moved lately, but every organization, magazine etc. gets address changes and you don't have to notify them. The politicians looking for money have changed my address quicker than I could.

5. I've never seen that happen
I still get mail for people who moved out years ago,
and mail sent to me at old addresses just disappears.

3. Yes, and USPS sells access to it, you can access it too. There's no privacy anymore

There's an outfit called MELISSA where you can buy your way into any public records data you want, pretty much. Saves hauling your ass to the registry of deeds, vital records, and so on...

4. You might want to fix "date" in your subject line to "data". (nt)

7. I heard the whole description a few weeks ago of the Center that forwards
mail from a clerk explaining it to the guy in front of me. All the mail goes to a central place, then is forwarded. Of course, there's a database, but I never saw it "in print" before and it just became unnerving.....

8. Think That's Scary - Check Out ACXIOM
There is much more than a national change of address database out there. I had the "opportunity" to attend some meetings at ACXIOM a couple of years ago. They are a leader in "business intelligence" and "customer relationship management". From their web site you can see that "With some of the largest databases in the world, Acxiom is known for its technology. Many of our databases exceed 20 terabytes, and our Data Center exceeds eight acres of raised floor space."

You can bet they do more than keep track of your change of address. With 8 acres of raised floor space they can keep track of your change of underwear.
