Have you seen the "Billboards Against Obama" in your area? |

I live in Anniston, Alabama. Right in front of our local Walmart Supercenter is a full-size digital billboard. It displays an advertisement for approximately 5 seconds before switching to a different ad. These ads rotate through a repeating sequence, and the brightness combined with the changing images make the billboard very eye-catching. Approaching the billboard from the North, it is visible for a good half a mile stretch containing 3 traffic lights. Of course, it is clearly visible from the parking lot of the Walmart. Needless to say, this thing is see by a shitload of people every day.
A few months ago, a new 'billboard' appeared in the rotation. Bold, ALL CAPS white letters against a bright red background, it reads:
FIGHT BACK! VOTE REPUBLICAN!
This ad was placed by the Alabama Republican Party. It's been on there every day for at least 4 months now. The same words in the same colors and layout are now showing up on bumper stickers and yard signs.
Yesterday, as I was driving through the area, a new ad caught my eye. This one features large words against a dark blue background and it reads:
OBAMA TOUGH ON CAPITALISTS SOFT ON TERRORISTS
This ad is placed by a group called Billboards Against Obama. The group's web address is posted clearly across the bottom of the billboard.
Later yesterday evening, my wife and I were driving through the same area and I told her to watch the billboard the see a vile new conservative message. She didn't get to see the one I mentioned, but another ad in the same style, placed by the same organization, soon popped up. It reads:
NOT RACIST, NOT VIOLENT JUST NO LONGER SILENT
It appears that this organization has at least 2-probably more - ads in rotation.
I suppose there's nothing that can be done about it. Hell, if you've got the money you can put up a political billboard... misleading and inflammatory as it may be. Besides, Alabama is in no danger of turning blue.
If you are curious about the organization, their web addy is billboardsagainstobama.com
i was mainly wondering if anyone has seen these billboards in other locations. It seems like a waste to put them in Alabama. I fear that these things are probably more common in areas that are less predictably conservative.

3. Not in my very liberal area of California. |

I don't see that playing too well around here. I can't imagine having to see that nonsense every day.

Here in Alabama, stuff like this is a clear case of preaching to the choir.
In a liberal area of California, it would be more like preaching to Richard Dawkins.
edit for spelling.

7. Those billboards cost money |
|
Let the fools spend their money if it makes them feel better. Do you think they really have the desired affect?

From the website, it looks like they are soliciting donations to fund these billboards.
Their message seems aimed at defending the uber-wealthy against anything that might hamper their continued accumulation of wealth. No doubt, the dupes who donate money to erect these signs are overwhelmingly middle/working class people whose interests are best served by progressive leaders.

8. Sometimes I wonder if a lot of the 700 bill in bailout money didn't go directly to the GOP |
|
They sure are well funded--not that they'd need that money to cause havoc.

I don't have the patience to research who is funding this. There is money here trying to manipulate the masses.

10. Yeah, there's one here in Wisconsin... |

...on Hiway 41 between Milwaukee and Green Bay. "Obama hurts small business" or some such drivel. Free speech. No big deal.
