6. It certainly does.
It sucks all over, but some places suck more than others. Some places probably won't see much improvement for at least another decade while others improvement will come sooner.

Kiss the construction boom business goodbye as well as lucrative tourism.

On the upside of this, the rampant suburban sprawl will hopefully slow down to a crawl, force cities to become more efficient, improve public transportation and diversify their jobs industry.

3. How about "Moderate" or "improving" or even "poor"?
Rather a silly push poll as is.

Of course jobs are plentiful everywhere as we have many many more employed people than unemployed. Openings on teh other hand are variable, but "plentiful" or the opposite are not adequate measures even there.

It's hard to be enthusiastic about the economy when you are being foreclosed on, you had to sell your car to raise cash, and you are driving your friend's formally stored 1993 Cadillac Brougham that gets thirteen miles per gallon.

36. Hey, you've got to keep your game on!
Maybe people won't mess with you now. ;)

I'll never forget the first time my husband along with 1800 other workers was laid off from Newport News Shipbuilding in one day. We had just bought our first home (it was small and cheap, but we should have waited) in a neighborhood full of other shipyard workers. Our first baby was only two weeks old. We ended up losing our home to foreclosure, our car to repossession, etc. Moved into a tiny apt. down the road from where my husband had just found a contract job so he could walk to work. My sister gave us her old Ford Escort and we were SO excited--we felt we'd hit the jackpot, LOL! That thing burned through two-three quarts of oil a week but we kept it running for several more years until we could save up for something else.

If you keep that car long enough you could probably trick it out, you know?

I know how you feel about air and radio - unfortunately, my CD player crapped out last summer... oh well, what can I say; my tax refund wasn't going to cover both a new set of tires (which I desperately needed) AND new/repaired CD player, so I chose practical over tunes. Hey, at least we aren't taking the shoe leather express!

26. You said it about Cleveland.
I'm a writer and editor. When I go looking for job listings in Cleveland, the vast majority of them for writers and editors are freelance web site writing jobs where you get paid by the column (each different topic they're looking for writers on is listed as a separate job, and they renew the same old listings over and over weekly so they're always listed as "new jobs!"). I don't want to do piecework blogging--the pay wouldn't keep a cat alive and of course there are no benefits. It would be one thing if I had no experience and was just starting out trying to be a person who writes for a living, or a hobbyist, but I'm not. It's insulting to look up jobs for my specialty and see mostly nothing but pages and pages of "Freelance Bloggers Wanted to write on (Travel, Beauty, Sports, etc.)..."

30. Yes, it seems like a lot of the posted jobs right now fail to pay a 'living wage' so to speak.
And it IS insulting; especially to those of us closing in on 50, who have known "real jobs" with benefits, etc.....

That said, I actually love living in Cleveland (aside from the jobs situation) for a number of reasons. Actually, the jobs situation is really the only thing I dislike about this place.

Best of Luck to you!

20. DC Area
Plenty of jobs...many of them are good paying.

However, WHO you know is more important than what you know.

If anyone is having a hard time finding work - I strongly recommend getting trained in the IT Field (especially as a Network Administrator or Coder) as those jobs tend to be plentiful and pay well. I do IT work and I HATE computers\network administration. It is a good career with good rewards PLUS you do not have to be a genius - I am a perfect example of that..lol.

and even Oregon looks good by comparison, and there's not much there.

I am willing to take just about anything, but not in Nevada, if it is just "anything" as I cannot afford the rent and utilities anymore. I have to move in with family in Oregon, and that it is the pits to have to do that.

But I'm truly glad all is well with you.

IMO, it has lead to some pretty nice interaction between folks.

You may want to try this, however; the next time you come across an OP that doesn't particularly interest you, or you personally don't think you have anything of value to add to the discussion, why not simply move on to another OP?

Attacking the OP like this is in poor taste and makes posting unpleasant for everyone.

Yes, there's an abundance of jobs in San Diego where they are looking for highly experience, sometimes college graduates... and start them off at $10/hour. Seriously!?! Ridiculous...

I still have my decent paying job, but they have cut our dental insurance, disability insurance and life insurance policies. And just when I was thinking of going to the dentist...

I don't know our local unemployment rate; nor do I trust what MSM spews. They say 9% and probably mean 19%. Anyways... I have been looking for a job for well over two years. With over 15 years experience in the financial industry; I cannot find a job that pays more that $30k/yr. This reduced salary also include 3x the commute, 2+ additional hours in the car, all for...

I'd rather risk staying at my local job in hopes that the doors do not shut down on me...

63. It depends on your profession/occupation in my area.....
These type of polls break my heart because I know that behind every statistic is a real person that is hurting right now. I am an assistant manager at a restaurant located in a hotel. Sales are down. The waitresses make decent tips but there are fewer of them. We offer health care, paid vacation, and decent pay. My brother was laid off from the largest plumbing contractor in Central Florida last October and still is out of work. I try to keep him positive but it is getting difficult and frankly, I cannot help him financially. I am a widow and a state employment retiree. I started working at this restaurant 3 years ago. I have to believe that life will get better though or I (and probably a lot of other people) will go insane. My prayers are with everyone.

60. Far less openings than applicants and it is depressing wages too
Employers have such a huge liter to pick from they can't pick the best unless they stumble on them in a random sample they select based on keywords. They certainly can get away with about any wage and be competitive. I'm seeing similar jobs starting as much as a third less than they did a few years ago. A few even more.

Even when and if we get the jobs back there will have been so much ground lost in wages that it makes the light at the end of the tunnel look yellow and dim.

Not too bad in Fort Worth.

And the company I work for on the Arlington/Grand Prairie city line has been undergoing some rather dramatic growth over the past eighteen months-- I've even been able to get a few of my own unemployed friends hired on in different parts of the company.

72. 12.3% unemployment and very few real jobs.
Very few subsistence wage mcjobs for that matter. Husband unemployed for second time this depression since last April after finding 6 months of work. I was self employed but the depression ruined my business.

San Jose/Silicon Valley, now home not only to double-digit unemployment but to Northern California's largest homeless population, eclipsing even San Francisco. Seriesly. :eyes:

83. 44% unemployment here
"The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that for the year that ended in September, Michigan's official unemployment rate was 12.6 percent. Using the broadest definition of unemployment, the state unemployment rate was 20.9 percent, or 66 percent higher than the official rate. Since Detroit's official rate for October was 27 percent, that broader rate pushes the city's rate to as high as 44.8 percent."
