Heard way more in past two days about Lawrence Taylor than I've ever heard about Roethlisberger |
|
There most certainly is a double standard in the media when it comes to reporting black athletes vs. white.

2. There is a definite difference in assumptions. |
|
Ben is a reported serial rapist, but he gets the benefit of the doubt, because she was real attractive and drunk and stuff, and you know women just make up stuff like that. Lawrence, though, must be guilty because... well look at him. He looks guilty, right? I mean, who would make up stuff like that?

4. Sports Illustrated cover story on Big Ben |
|
I think both are somewhat protected by the media. Both seem to be rotten people and, even on the assumption of innocence until proven guilty, keep putting themselves in curious predicaments. I think sports stars are way overpaid coddled babies anyways.

big Ben was the lead story on ESPN for three weeks straight.
On other news outlets, it dominated coverage as well.
You're allowing your agenda to "color" your perception of reality. (pun intended)

Seems like we need some data to settle this.

I've heard way more about Ben than LT. It probably depends on where you live. Ben being an active player got way more coverage here. It's save to say Bens problems got way more coverage now than LTs problems did when he was an active player. Although enough that people wondered if he'd get voted into the HoF due to his off field problems. Modern athletes get pounded by the press for both real and non-real stories in ways that they never did previously. The 24/7 news and internet makes these stories feeding frenzies. I really don't see much difference in the burying of any athlete these days. They all go down pretty hard. There are too many people with time/ website space that need stories to fill it.
