That, and the development tools are free. From http://developer.android.com/guide/publishing/app-signing.html (emphasis mine):

The Android system requires that all installed applications be digitally signed with a certificate whose private key is held by the application's developer. The Android system uses the certificate as a means of identifying the author of an application and establishing trust relationships between applications. The certificate is not used to control which applications the user can install. The certificate does not need to be signed by a certificate authority: it is perfectly allowable, and typical, for Android applications to use self-signed certificates.

What a difference, uh? It's nice to know who the good guys are.

1. Amazing how that works, eh?
Amazing how that works, eh?

Companies are allowed to set up rules however they like and consumers have a choice about which to use.

It's shocking, I know.. right?

3. That's why I seek to inform so people make a better choice.
Company X makes stupid anti-consumer rules. Company Y does not. Here's why. And people can make decisions based on that new information.

Amazing how that works, eh?

11. So is there a quality assurance process somewhere in there?
Or could I write an android app that steals everyones information with no oversight? Forgive me if I'm missing something here. I don't have any interest in app writing...but i do have an interest in the security of my device.

12. Probably the same one you get when you try a new food somewhere
Although some people want others to tell them how it taste first.

Same people probably only see movies someone else reviewed for them as well.

18. My X got food poisoning once at McD's, and
there is a difference between general regulations and forbidding people from getting porn on phones/etc.

Apple knows what is best for some, and they trust the apple people to make choices for them. Fine - that is their choice, I just think it is dumb.

21. I got food poisoning exactly once. In a restaurant in an upper-class mall in a rich neighborhood.
Street vendors in poor neighborhoods? Never had a problem.

GPS, contact list, internet, etc. You have the option of allowing or not.

Driod doesn't patronize its users and understands that they can use open source and allow users to make it better and well, make decisions. Apple locks you into what it thinks is best for you. That's cool for some, but I prefer to go for open source.
