Why would side and angle impact accidents increase in frequency
when a camera is in place? It was just on the Atlanta news that is exactly what happened and some communities are taking their cameras down.

I've given it some thought & I can't imagine why a camera would cause more of that type of accident. I can see more rear end collisions because the nut at the head of the line sees the camera and slams on the brakes to stop for the light and not get a ticket and the Guy in the back don't expect him to do that Had rear end him, but side and and rear collisions????

A retired State Trooper was interviewed & said if he were destined to be invoiced in an accident he hoped it would be a rear end collision because there are far fewer injuries and far less physical harm.

Do you have any clue why cameras increase side and angel collisions?

1. The guy in the middle of the intersection waiting for the yellow light
expects the traffic to stop on yellow because nobody wants a ticket. He starts to go and BAM!

9. Not as often

because of the jokers who speed up even more, thinking they can beat the camera. The cameras are digital, so they can't.

Nobody wants a ticket, that's why the guy in the intersection starts his turn so he can get out of range of the ticket. That's also why a chump thinks he's just going to have a blurred license plate and will dodge that ticket.

Thump.

4. Germany solved this problem in a rather elegant way.

By having all lights go red-yellow-green-yellow-red. And yes, all directions where yellow at the same time. And if a pedestrian even stuck his/her toe over curb they have to yield. Unlike here, where being a pedestrian is akin to putting your life into the hands of those who demand instant gratification.

I'll bet that's it.

5. I remember the guy in the gorilla suit on Countdown. I think it
was in Atlanta where they had installed a camera. Some guy got his old VW bug and a gorilla suit, covered the plates and drove through a couple times flipping the camera off!

7. Fact is that accidents will ultimately increase when there is a camera
Edited on Fri May-07-10 11:27 PM by MindPilot
The very simple reason is that people will shift all their focus to not triggering the camera and that naturally diverts attention from the process of getting through the intersection safely. I find myself doing it--approaching an intersection with a RLC, I lock on to the light, and I don't look at anything else until I'm clear of the intersection. When there are several hundred bucks (or thousands if you want to factor in insurance) riding on not being in that intersection when that camera triggers, it's a natural reaction.

8. One of the nice things about riding a motorcycle is that they can not get face shots
My rear plate is also hard to see from above due to a top bag. I like it that way.

I consider private company revenue generators (traffic light or speed cameras) to be fair targets for monkey wrenching. If they are low enough and hand sledge hammer is the tool of choice, higher up spray paint or my friends RV. A little anarchy is good for the soul.
