Video Shows Columbia SWAT Team Killing Dog in Drug Bust

COLUMBIA, Mo - The shooting death of a pit bull in a SWAT team raid is bringing about policy changes in the Columbia, Missouri Police Department.

A SWAT team raided a home in Columbia and during the raid, shot and killed the family's pit bull. They also shot and injured a corgi. YouTube video of the raid shows a child was also in the home at the time.

The police chief is backing up his officers' actions.

"Every indicator to me shows that this was a justifiable shooting. The dog was aggressive and the dog got shot," Chief Ken Burton said.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that SWAT officers found a grinder, a pipe and a small amount of marijuana in the home.

Columbia's mayor said changes will be made to the policy police officers follow when executing a search warrant.

1. We villainize certain dog breeds as well as certain people

(e.g., Muslims, currently). Wanton violence towards them is then oh so easy to justify--even when they are witnessed by a hysterical grief-stricken child. Of course the adrenaline that drives these guys isn't always discriminating. I still haven't gotten over the killing of the Maryland mayor's beloved labs in front of his elderly mother-in-law over a mistaken drug bust. Labradors, for God's sakes! The gentle family favorite.

I honestly don't think I would come out of such a situation alive-- where such abuse of power by those sworn to protect--was putting my own family members (and that most certainly includes my beloved pups) were harmed or killed. I just don't know how you would ever get over that.

They would no doubt pee in their pants if they ever ran into a dangerous criminal.

It's home to Univ of MO and a very progressive city. They have even decriminalized possessing small amounts of marijuana.

I saw this story on DU the other day and was stunned it happened in Columbia.

According something I read earlier, the only thing they think the SWAT team did wrong was serving the warrant a few days too late.

I would say that having armed intruders burst into the house and shoot the family dog in front of children does more harm to the kids than pot ever will.
