I assume your son is returning from a deployment. You must be happy and proud to have him home.

VN vets say, "Welcome Home" to current returnees because that kind of acceptance was lacking in our own experience. Some of the current vets don't think they need to hear that from us because, nowadays, support for them is so widespread. For others, it does really mean something. And support for them is more than a matter of well-wishing and yellow ribbons.

A journalist friend who was embedded with U.S. forces in Iraq later saw his NG son called for two deployments--one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. Despite his PTSD, the military tried to call the son for a third deployment. It was only through the intervention of a friend of mine, a therapist who is a VN combat vet, that the son's deployment was called off and he was released from the NG. (We recently got a vet center where I live, and my friend was hired as its readjustment counselor).

For serving troops and for vets, we must be vigilant in making sure that both the military and the DVA live up to President Lincoln's commitment to "him who shall have borne the battle." Vietnam Veterans of America was founded with the vow that, "Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another."

I'm happy that your son has come home. Now that he's back, I hope that both the military and the DVA will treat him as he deserves.

I hope you're having a GREAT party for your son's return. I'm glad he made it.
