Holidaymakers are being urged to boycott a popular Mexican beach resort over the pregnancy of an eleven-year-old rape victim.
Activists claim tourists should stay away from Cancun, a favourite sunshine getaway for Britons, because the authorities there failed to protect the rights of the schoolgirl, who is carrying the baby to term.
Cancun recently passed a law banning most elective abortions. But women’s rights groups claim the girl, known only as Amalia, wasn’t told by doctors that the new legislation allowed for rape victims to have abortions. They say the girl is small even for her age and that forcing her to give birth may put her life in danger
She was just ten-years-old when she was raped and reportedly wants to keep the baby despite the controversy that has erupted over her plight.
Local media claimed the girl's mother would not have approved of an abortion even if she had known about the exception for rape victims, but activists said she may have been influenced by right-to-life groups that backed the new law.
