Leaving the country to find work overseas |
|
I keep coming back to this, because I am starting to think this may be my only option. Leaving behind family and going overseas for work. The unemployment crisis in the US really doesn't seem very important to business or politicians. Not only that, but it is more structural than just the result of a transient recession (the boomers are broke and cant retire, there has been 0 net job growth in the last 10 years, we are becoming a low wage service sector economy). I don't see an age of an adequate number of decent jobs coming anytime soon.
Are there job opportunities overseas aside from english teacher? Can you get a job in your field if your field is engineering, science, math or something like that?

2. Well here is what i have done in the past |

I can always find a Job in Saudi. Really great paying jobs. The trick is to find one with a company that also has openings in other desired countries. So I go to Saudi for a year, make a ass load of money then transfer to a more appealing location like Germany. Have done it for years but not since my daughter was born 11 years ago. Things may have changed but I still get offers to go. If you're single you can survive Saudi for a year maybe 2. It helps if your single and male although it isn't unheard of women getting nursing jobs.

I can understand nurses or english teachers finding jobs almost anywhere. My degree is in a scientific field and I am trained for laboratory work.

Not just about Saudi Arabia, but any oil rich mideast nation (Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, etc) where there might be openings in fields like science for ex-pats from the US?
I feel like here in the US the best I can hope for is a few short term contracts with no benefits or security with long bouts of unemployment between them. Basically I can live the lifestyle I did in college, save as much as I can, and hope I can survive on savings during my 6-12 month bout of unemployment between short term contracts. And I don't want my whole career to be that way.

6. I was invited to go as a nurse |

but the logistics of being a single woman in that country were too daunting for me to consider it. I'd have had to find a male to accompany me to buy my groceries, which means paying one, at the very least.
I'd have made five times what I could have made in the US, untaxed. However, their culture prevented me from accepting the offer.

3. When I graduated college in a specialized field, Isent applications all over the world. |

The best opportunities come to people who are willing to be mobile. One downside to consider is that once you leave the US, there are fewer companies who will fly you in for interviews. I battle this bias with my university because its not that much different to fly someone from Europe or Mexico to the SE USA than the west coast. Nevertheless, my people often balk at international applications.

8. There are, look in Australia, Norway, many countries are looking for specific talents |
|
As long as you are younger than 45 you should be a candidate to start with a new company in a new country if you are in the right field.... each country is different in it's requirements..... Not a bad way to go if you're educated and can move.

13. We know specifically about Australia but just recently looked at Norway... |

It really depends on the area you want to go if we're talking about Australia... the rules for finding a job and immigrating for it have stayed the same. My friend in Sydney says they were hit, but things are definitely getting better, housing is still expensive, jobs available... We looked in Brisbane, which is really where we wanted to be. Our son is looking at University in Norway, and their rules for working and immigrating are similar to Australia... they are also looking for similar talents.

I eventually want to retire in British Columbia, but if I don't get out of Dodge as soon as possible I won't be 'retiring' anywhere. I'm a blue collar guy and the money they are paying for my trade is outstanding - meaning that I can feel good knowing that I am filling a need and NOT taking food out of a citizens mouth by doing it.

If things dont change I do not want to be stuck in the job I currently have - and I will do anything to get out of it, and if that includes leaving the country, so be it.
