Show of hands.....Who thinks the BP "Containment Dome" will be a big flop?
BP faces setback in containment dome for oil spill
By Steve Gelsi, MarketWatch

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- BP officials said Saturday they've run into obstacles in deploying the containment dome lowered to the sea floor to catch leaking crude oil at a well head one mile below the surface.

BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said hydrates, mainly crystallized methane frozen from the crushing pressure of the ocean and low temperatures, clogged up the opening at the top of the giant funnel after it landed on the sea floor one mile below the surface.

The 100-ton cofferdam has been set aside from the well head as officials attempt to remove the hydrates and figure out a way to solve the setback.

At a press conference, Suttles said BP is studying ways to heat the area to prevent hydrates from forming on the funnel.

Once the structure is in place, a tube will be attached to it to suck up oil and water for processing at a tanker ship at the surface.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard said it found oil off the Chandeleur Islands in Louisiana. ..........(more)

1. if we all put our thinking caps on,
we can see this is gonna be just an excercise in futility. At the present rate of 210,000 gallons of oil a day, how many ships are they gonna need to process the raw crude and take it away for how many days? How many processing ships are on site?

My feelings are the gulf of Mexico is now farked.

But they are doing the best they can to save that 500,000 dollars american that could have been used for a blow out protector.

9. The Russians actually did suggest that; they've done it
The ideaa is to set off the nuke underground. The Russians say it compresses the rock and closes off all the pipes. They have had to use that procedure themselves on occasion, and they say it works.

3. I still remain hopeful that smart people can find a way to reseat the dome...
and prevent the formation of hydrates.

is normally called a prison. Sort em out, lock em up for crimes against humanity and nature.

20. I'm asking. All these prophets of doom around here it sure seems like...
a few will be disappointed if the world doesn't end because of this blowout.

It seems every time there's the slightest bit of good news or hope the Jeremiahs are all over themselves about how it can't work, won't work, and the Gulf is lost forever.

Just to make everyone's day, I'll remind you all that there are almost 4,000 rigs out in the Gulf, and every one of them could blow with catastrophic results.

(But they haven't yet, have they, and why is that?)

23. How many of the 4,000+ are at similar depths?
And, until two weeks ago, we've gotten lucky. One blown out of 4,000 is too great a risk for the potential damage, as we are seeing.

27. There is a subset of the DU population
That realize our leaders are one of the three things in America right now

1) Inept
2) Corrupt
3) Power hungry assholes

and it isn't a partisan thing, the country is lead by the nicer, less inept, about equally corrupt squad politically speaking.

Does the "doom and gloom" squad want bad things to happen. No.

With the realization that the people in charge of the government, business, and cultural institutions of America are absolute morons who couldn't manage a Burger King effectively we pretty much realize most things these leaders try won't end well.

There is no schadenfreude. What has been done cannot be undone for about 90 days.

No schadenfreude, however, I will not be surprised when these assholes are given a pass by Barack Obama.

29. Even if they unclog the dome, the pipe will still clog
No way around asphaltenes, parafins, and the low temperatures a mile below the surface of the Gulf.

They are only doing the dome to make it look like they're doing something until they can ramp up another rig and drill a new hole to take off the pressure. Three months monimum before the gusher slows.
