Meet the Stray Dog That Attends Every Protest in Athens
Meet the Stray Dog That Attends Every Protest in Athens

Guardian says the dog's name is Kanellos. He appeared most recently at
deadly protests against Greece's new austerity measures, the Guardian
writes. (Image via AP)

Maybe the commotion excites him. He always sides with the protesters,
and has braved teargas and fire to be with them. (Image via Getty)

Crowds provide great treats for canine scavengers—like this milk bottle
in Syntagma Square. (Image via AP)

Or maybe he just hates the police. (Image via Getty)

There are other protest dogs, too. A Reddit user who lives in the
Exarxeia neighborhood of Athens says the Guardian misidentified
this dog, whose name is actually Louk. The confusion, he says,
stems from rich tradition of Athenian protest dogs:
These dogs live in Exarxeia and they don't belong to nobody. We
call them "the dogs of the movement" and there many of them, such
as ROZA, DICK, RIBO, PETROS, LOUCY. Its funny but they are our
comrades, we protect and feed them and they protect us as well.

- You can always trust the instincts of a stray dog to know who you can trust. Cops ARE NOT on the list......

4. This is really weird
I saw that dog in videos of the protest 3 days ago. It was only a fraction of a second, but I thought, "What's with this dog running around?"

As a dog owner, I'd say there's something significant here, but I can't place it.

It's just.... weird.

17. The dogs are unharmed. Points up the difference between the European and American cops.
Hate to think about what American riot cops would do to these pooches.

18. First the press would have to acknowledge that there was a protest other than
a teabagging assembly... otherwise you'd never know anyone assembled anywhere or that the police decided to shoot at dogs.

19. He's always on the side of the protestors.
Still, you have to give credit to the Greek police. If that was here, he would have been shot.

Some more great pictures of him:

25. That's one of the bravest dog I've ever seen!
There's video in which the riot police fire tear gas canisters at the crowd. When they shoot, The dog runs towards them! It's almost as if he's trying to protect the protesters!

30. Or maybe he hates the cops...
True story, one dog who's owner died, he basically became our mascot. We named him Socorrista, one of our volunteers took care of his medical needs. He had a good life, and he was a street dog.

Well, when Federales showed up that dog snarled. He hated them, with a passion.

Kanellos reminds me of that.
