Habitat program empowers women helping women
Stacy Westerbeck powered on the miter saw and sliced the grey strip of siding to fit the measured space on the house’s exterior wall.
Westerbeck joined about 15 other women Saturday installing siding on a house in Box Elder during the Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program. The Rapid City Lowe’s store provided materials for the event.

The Women Build program empowers women to participate in Habitat for Humanity by creating a less intimidating environment where they can feel more comfortable to learn the necessary skills, according to Heidi Christner, operations manager for the local Habitat for Humanity. She said the women, like all of the organization’s volunteers, just want to help other people in the community.
“Affordable housing is an important issue, and these ladies have stepped up to help make a difference,” Christner said.
Often, Habitat for Humanity homeowners are single mothers, which makes the Women Build day a neat experience for everyone involved, Christner said.
