"I Support Elena Kagan" Thread |
|
I just thought it would be interesting to get an idea of who supports the nomination and who doesn't (assuming, of course, every source reporting is correct in saying Kagan will be the nominee).
I understand people will get upset about a quote here or something said there. She is going to have her entire life and everything she's ever said, whispered, thought or dreamed out for everyone to see and interpret. People will worry about a lack of material to judge her by, and frankly I'm alright with that.
But through it all, I trust Obama and his vetting process and I trust Elena Kagan will make a fine Supreme Court Justice along the lines of Thurgood Marshall and John Paul Stevens. Who's with me? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

2. I think I'll wait for the hearings |
|
As I did with Sotomayor - who I ended up liking.
Then I'll make up my own mind on whether or not she seems like a decent nominee. I don't "trust" any politician. Certainly not in matters as important as the Supreme Court. I leave the "Whatever our leader says is good . . ." memes to the Republicans.

3. she's already been through hearings when she was vetted for solicitor general |

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/01/elena-kagan-supreme-court_n_194519.htmlfrom 2009: Kagan arrived at the Department of Justice from her post as Dean of the Harvard Law School. She served as Associate Counsel to President Bill Clinton and as a clerk to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Should Obama choose her, it would mean his White House would have to fill another vacancy. But her academic and judicial pedigree seem almost better suited for the Court than as a lawyer arguing before it. Plus, she's already been through the confirmation process. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WrkINWb8iw

I'll have to go back and do a lot of reading on her. But I don't like the whole "Do you support her now or not?" stuff. I barely know her. I suspect that of most of us.

6. Trust me, this process will be completely different |

Solicitor General is an under-the-radar appointment that never attracts much attention from the right wing smear machine. This time around, she'll get withering criticism from the left and the right.

I believe he put more time into his selection than McCain did in picking Palin as his running mate
