a spill is what happens to your lemonade when the glass is knocked over. You can clean up a spill with a few paper towels.

This word usage is driving me nucking futz.

oil is accidentally let loose into the environment. Even if technically it's not a "spill".

Just as the late great George Carlin so eloquently pointed out, two planes that nearly collide is not a "near miss" it's a "near hit"
