I have to fight really hard to stop myself from tuning out |
|
I too often get feelings of defeat. No matter how much I care, no matter what I do, things keep moving to the right. To be sure, the rightward movement, over time, is two steps right, one step left, but to the right it moves. I'm not sure how much longer I can continue to care when faced the futility of it. I'm also hopping this feeling will pass.
The environment
Greed
Destruction of our democracy
Regression
Rightward tilt
Corporatism (really Facism2000)
"I got mine. Fuck you." -ism

1. The pendulum is large and heavy |

and it's just starting the return swing. It will get there, even if we don't all live to see it.

6. I'm less satisfied that it is swinging back. I see it as simply swinging less fast to the right |
|
But rightward nonetheless.

I usta to post stuff about military deaths/military injuries and they way they have been jacking veterans around. That didn't seem to get much of a rise.
I've been concentrating on the bucks and new systems for the last few years. Let's see how that works out....

5. In many ways, we're a "shiny object" society |

"The Troops®" everyone "supported" are pretty much on their own nowadays. The VA remains a clusterfuck. Gates is getting ready to cut pay and bennies, but the big weapons systems keep on keepin' on.
It is discouraging on every front. EVERY front.

3. I think the drift to the right |
|
is partly because the Southern U.S. is gaining in population and political power, and this part of the U.S. is more authoritarian and much less democratic than other parts of the U.S.
The South supported FDR because he was a Democrat (white Southerners still refused to support the Republicans because they freed the slaves). My hometown newspaper was named the Democrat for that reason. I remember a man in 1952 saying that Eisenhower was the right man for President, but the wrong party.
Nixon and Reagan (who made a speech that white Southerners thought was code for excusing the killing of 3 civil rights workers) capitalized on those feelings about race and converted white Southerners to the Republican party.

RW paradise in the US, be my guest. I won't live more than another 35 years or so. And I am already at the point where reproductive choice doesn't matter to me personally.
But then I get my dander up again and rejoin the fray!

Giving a fuck gets harder and harder.
But yeah. It always ultimately gets to me and I always (so far) get back into it.
