Gordon Brown's resigned....

:(

I feel sorry for him. There wasn't really much he could do about being ugly and a bit grumpy and Scottish...

1. Who will take over now
as Labour leader and potentially the next PM? (Labour has the first shot by convention at forming a new government)

2. ... and carrying Blair's war baggage.
Edited on Mon May-10-10 12:50 PM by SteppingRazor
When Bush did the Iraq War, Americans had a somewhat viable alternative in the Democrats, who at least had a large antiwar contingent mixed in with the mealymouthed "Oh-but-the-whole-world-thought-Saddam-had-WMD" people.

But in the UK, it's not as though antiwar Brits could ditch Labour and vote Tory. Thus, change has to come from within the Labour party.

5. It's difficult to know what to think about that.

Gordon's since expressed what looks suspiciously like some kind of contrition.

Tony hasn't. Tony's gone nuts.

9. Oh, I don't dismiss Brown's contrition. I just think it's a matter of too little, too late.
I'm certainly sympathetic to the fact that the dude was between a rock and a hard place, but Labour made it's bed and Brown had to lie in it, to hopelessly mix my metaphors. I realize that his replacement as head of Labour will likely be from within his own cabinet, and thus a continuance of most of Brown's policies, but Labour needs new blood nevertheless, if only to get a few steps removed from Blair.

4. The poodle who crammed his head far up Bush's ass has disrupted UK politics in so many ways.
Sad, really.

11. And Tony sowed the wind and Gordon reaped the whirlwind..
Gordon shouldn't have stuck with Tony for so long, and especially not condoned the Iraq War. But he was a much better PM. Not good but much better. As I always say, Labour didn't defeat the Tories in 1997, but in 2007. Blair was a Tory. We have had only three years of Labour government, and during that time there *have* been improvements in the NHS and education. And Gordon was in the end prepared to sacrifice himself to try to stop the Tories getting in (whether it will work or not, we shall see), and I will always respect him for that.

14. That whole turn Labour into Thatcher's Tories thing
didn't work out too well in a country that still has an educational system.
