Wonkette: Maine GOP Platform Hijacked By Teabaggers In Comical Fashion
Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins must be looking forward to their next primary seasons with such enthusiasm! “An overwhelming majority of delegates to the Maine Republican convention tonight voted to scrap the the proposed party platform and replace it with a document created by a group of Tea Party activists.” This document is called The Bible. No, it is called something else, but it is basically a copy-paste of The Bible: “The official platform for the Republican Party of Maine is now a mix of right-wing fringe policies, libertarian buzzwords and outright conspiracy theories.”

The document calls for the elimination of the Department of Education and the Federal Reserve, demands an investigation of “collusion between government and industry in the global warming myth,” suggests the adoption of “Austrian Economics,” declares that “‘Freedom of Religion’ does not mean ‘freedom from religion’” (which I guess makes atheism illegal), insists that “healthcare is not a right,” calls for the abrogation of the “UN Treaty on Rights of the Child” and the “Law Of The Sea Treaty” and declares that we must resist “efforts to create a one world government.”

It also contains favorable mentions of both the Tea Party and Ron Paul.

3. At one nutty idea per person, I didn't know, (as I was born in Maine)
that there were THAT MANY nuts all in that one wonderful state, let alone in Knox County!

The Mainers I know are much more sane than that, but, I suppose there are a few out there that still spend their
winter nights in the northern back woods dreaming up this stuff.

I wonder if Snowe and Collins have read it.

5. AH, the Austrian School of Economics.
The last resort of idiots attempting to appear intelligent. Have you actually read any of that drek? Yeesh.

11. Hey, I read Frederick Von Weiser! His idea is called the "opportunity cost."
I also had to read Eugen BohmBawerk, which nearly drove me to distraction and made me rue the day I decided to take that Econ course in grad school...at least Marx was kinda droll but these Austrians, man!

14. I'm surprised they name-dropped a European country
I would've figured they were conditioned against mentioning that place in a positive context.

7. There you go, Republicans
Your party, as re-imagined along the lines you've been courting so assiduously. Is it everything you imagined? You didn't want to alienate your nutcase base, and you sure didn't want to rein in the God Squadders; they were sooooo reliable a voting bloc. Now they've taken control, and you're reaping the fruits of your pandering labors. Congratulations.

I know that the popular media like to bend over backwards to graft the oddest ideas they can find to everyone in the Democratic party. Some self-described liberal or progressive goes too far, and suddenly every Democrat has to have an opinion about whatever strange idea got floated by some fringe voice somewhere. But here we have the lunacy front and center. It's not on some blog, or some crazy trial balloon being floated; this is the Republican party mainstream in the state of Maine. Will the popular media buttonhole Snowe and Collins and force them either to sign on or to denounce their own party?

Answer: Of course not.

9. Steve Gilliard used to say about the Republican collusion with the lunatic fringe,
"The Devil will have his due." I think the Devil is calling in his loan.

15. Snowe and Collins may live to regret....
their unwillingness to stand up to the Bush Administration, or make any serious attempt to stop the far right drift of the GOP. Sounds like they could go the way of Crist and Bennett

18. Do they really expect their gubernatorial candidates to endorse these ideas?
It is a statewide election. This crap wouldn't even fly in Knox County, where the turd came from.
