Attn. Gulf Coasters: Dont volunteer to clean up BP's mess
BP made a gamble when they decided to not spend a few thousand on a rig blowout preventer. They lost. This spill, as with everything they do, is an example of a douchebag with an MBA crunching numbers and deciding he could save/make the company a few clams. They fucked up and rolled craps and now they should be forced to be responsible for their own mess. We hear the mantra of Big Business: Privatize the profits and socialize the costs. I refuse, and beg you, to not clean up their mess. Don't bail out BP. Make their wallets hurt, that's all they understand. They don't understand clean water, social responsibity, or anything else that a non-sociopath understands. They only understand $$$$, so make them spend some their insane profits to clean up their own mess.

If you happen to find yourself on a beach or marsh and you see a dead bird or sea turtle covered in oil, don't clean it up. Instead call your local media outlets to come photograph the destruction. Then package up said casualty of cancerous capitalism and mail it off to BP's corporate office.

Hayduke Lives and he better star getting a following

1. That is at the expense of the environment
I think refusing to help clean up the mess is the worst way to get after BP. You are just making the situation worst and you can always sue for compensation later.

4. I'll volunteer to help clean up the mess.... at $1000 per day, charged to BP and TransOcean.
You'll need to pay me that much to take the time off from my regular job, pay for local food and lodging, and to help cover any possible health care expenses that may arise from being so close to raw crude oil and dead wildlife.

5. Can't agree with you here
it's BP's mess, yes, but we are all responsible for the environment and wildlife and should do our best to help to make problem smaller, not to let it get worse.

6. Oh, yeah, that's great advice. Let the environment get destroyed, let animals die,
All in order to make a point. What a fucking idiotic thing to advocate, geez.

Look, BP is getting it's ass kicked on a daily basis about this oil spill, and frankly trying to do our part to help save the environment is much more important that trying to make some point that is already out there and well known.

10. BP will never change until they are forced to be responsible
How many times have the awards in the Exxon Valdez case been decreased?

BP only responds to cost v benefits, if we keep bailing them out there will be no motivation for them to change their ways.

11. So you want to let the environment just simply be ruined in order to prove a point?
That's beyond stupid, that's condemning an entire ecosystem, including the animals and people who live there to a few decades of hell.

You are being irresponsible with this POV of yours. You are advocating we do nothing in the face of potentially the greatest ecological disaster of all time. Don't you understand what insanity that is?

You want to punish BP, you punish them in court. You don't try and use living beings as the cudgel to beat them about the head and shoulders.

7. Tough call. I understand your point and I agree to some extent. I feel the same when
I see all the causes that we the people have to raise money for (e.g., cancer research). Shouldn't that be paid for by the government (by all)? Hell, cancel one bomber and cure half the diseases out there.

And when it comes to helping out the cretins at BP who caused this disaster in the first place, the argument is stronger. They (BP) would like nothing better than the feds and millions of volunteers down there, doing the work they should do to clean up the mess.

As on every issue, I feel we are getting closer to the make-or-break point. No more playing nice with the enemy. Compromising and giving in has gotten us nothing.

9. Ok, by that logic if your children
had fallen overboard on a chartered fishing trip and you were there, and it was possible for you to save them in a safe manner yet no one else did anything, wouldn't you jump the ship instead of standing around waiting for the ship's captain and crew to do the right thing?

I think not.

13. People who cleaned up the Valdez mess ended up with diseases related to toxic exposure...
So when you say don't clean up their mess it is the responsible thing to advise. BP isn't handing out any protective gear to prevent people from getting sick from diseases from exposure to the toxic nightmare they covered the Gulf with. Why aren't the BP executives on the beaches? Those sociopaths couldn't care less about other human beings or the environment. All they care about is money and making it in any way they can. They are worse than muggers because they are ripping people off and killing them on a massive scale. But not one BP or Halliburton executive will go to prison, not one. They could kill half the US population but because of corporate law they would be immune to prosecution and would be allowed to keep the millions in salaries, stock options, mansions, private islands and their other resources, while fishermen and others go hungry. And conservatives cheer on corporate attacks against human beings. What is wrong with conservatives? Are they all stupid, ignorant and idiots?

14. Well, if this isn't the classical "bite off your nose to spite your face post"
No intent to offend the OP, but really.....??? How can anyone that has made their home down there not try to address the damage? Yes, their efforts may be fruitless, but geebus, wouldn't most people feel like they had to try? It is not like the damages are not going to go into the countless billions of $$ to begin with. Why not try to mitigate some of the damage before all is lost... I know that I would

15. People who cleanup
will get sick with lifelong illnesses unless they wear complete protective gear.
The oil and the cleaning materials and now the dispersants are toxic.
Some have died and there are many sick in Alaska who are chronically ill, unable to work and not getting any compensation for their injuries. The cost was shifted to the state in the form of Medicaid and welfare.

Corporations have cooked the books when it comes to liability for the health damage done to humans.
The studies about toxic exposures and health are very minimal and much of what exists is fraudulent data.
The lack of studies demonstrating a direct link to an individuals illness do not exist and never will as long as corporations have their way.

Look into what happened to the AK workers before volunteering.

16. This from my local TV station
"Hands-on work to save oil-soaked birds and other wildlife is a complex and potentially dangerous process, and first and foremost it is important that only trained volunteers participate on the front lines. Untrained volunteers can pose a risk not only to themselves, but to the birds and wildlife they are trying to save."

17. That is good to hear
I hope this message is repeated often.
When the oil hits the coasts the people will be cleaning the beaches, rocks, plant life and structures that harbor the oil. I hope they put the message out on that too.

24. right
not everybody can do this. And then if you save the birds, and they have no healthy food...sometimes it can be crueler to keep them alive.

Scientists and people who experienced the Valdez aftermath need to be advising on this. Volunteers are well-meaning, but just not understanding the difficulties, and implications.

Pictures of people cleaning birds may give people hope, but it's not the big picture.

People who live here, who benefit from our coastline. The inmates working on this have all volunteered to be part of the cleanup, but I didn't see that mentioned in the article.

22. Too bad BP isn't forced to pay for the healthcare of those who do volunteer
Help these assholes clean up their mess? Get healthcare. For life. That's the very least BP could offer volunteers IMO.

23. Easy to say if you don't live there.....BP doesn't. What do they care?
Edited on Tue May-11-10 01:17 PM by Desertrose
I'd do everything I could to save the wildlife & estuaries.

Screw BP. They will answer one way or another - the guilty always do...but the wildlife is innocent. No way I'd let them suffer if I could change it,just to send a "message" to BP. Like they give a shit (beyond $$) anyway.
