Her first crib is a latex-glove box: Three-day-old premature baby Jessica Thelusma rests in a bed made out of a cardboard box in the emergency room of General Hospital in Port-au-Prince.

5. That is a very powerful image. Incredible.
It draws you in and makes you want to know more about this baby.

I just want to take her home.

:wow:

9. As a medic I ueed a wheel barrow
cardboard boxes, the bottom of my Trauma Kit... wooden boxes... oy...

We had to get creative, as many a times we did not have all the ahem... proper gear.

10. Where were you a medic? In the service?
Did you have to deal with a lot of births "in the field"?

11. Mexican Red Cross in Tijuana
and I "caught" over 20 kids. I hated that... 98% are fine and mom does the job, we are just the cheering squad. It is the complicated births that I feared... like the six and a half month preemie that I delivered alive to the General Hospital.

12. Cool
So you've seen poverty up close and personal. Not many Americans do.

13. Yep, grew up in Mexico
did that since the country opened it's doors to my dad, a holocaust survivor.

The level of poverty you see in places like the Ciudades Perdidas is not something you can explain, fully. There is a smell too, from lack of basic services.

We did miracles given the resources we had. Oh and more than once I filled a gas tank so we could continue running calls.

him putting premature babies in boxes in a low temp oven to keep them warm. That was way back at the turn of the 20th century. Looks like Haiti's hospitals are equivalent to medicine practiced way back when in Canada.vibes to that cute little one.
