For Airport Security, Size Matters

Cops: New high-tech screener triggered fight over manhood insult

MAY 6--A Transportation Security Administration screener is facing an assault rap after he allegedly beat a co-worker who joked about the size of the man's genitalia after he walked through a security scanner. The May 4 confrontation involved Rolando Negrin, 44, and other TSA employees who had previously taken part in a training session at Miami International Airport, according to the below Miami-Dade Police Department reports. Negrin, pictured in the mug shot at right, and his co-workers had been training with new "whole body image" machines--the controversial kind that provide very revealing images of a traveler--when Negrin walked through the scanner. "The X-ray revealed that has a small penis and co-workers made fun of him on a daily basis," reported cops. Following his arrest, Negrin told police that he "could not take the jokes anymore and lost his mind." After work Tuesday evening, Negrin confronted fellow TSA screener Hugo Osorno in an airport parking lot. Negrin wanted to "resolve a problem," and get Osorno, 34, to "finally respect him." Instead, Negrin allegedly pulled out a police baton and began striking Osorno, while demanding an apology. A witness told cops that Negrin told Osorno, in Spanish, "Get on your knees or I will kill you and you better apologize." When Negrin, wearing his TSA uniform, arrived for work yesterday, he was arrested on an aggravated battery count and booked into the Miami-Dade lockup. Osorno, police reported, suffered "bruises and abrasions on his back and arms" during the attack...

Considering some of the things we've seen people who are often bullied do recently, this doesn't come as a surprise at all. Not saying that the violence is justified, but this is often what happens when you push people until they snap.

16. I think TSA seeks out harrassers
Their mode of dealing with the public is harrassment, intimidation, creating and enforcing rediculous restrictions.

If they turn on each other occasionally, well is that a total surprise?

TSA doesn't hire people because of their ability to get along, to play nice with others.

Yeah, he's a bullying thug, working in a department full of bullying thugs.

25. Many people feel they have harrassing work environments; most don't attack people with batons.

No level of verbal aggression short of actual overt incitement to crime justifies a physically violent response.

The constitution guarantees my right to make your life an absolute misery by being rude to you without risking you hitting me. It doesn't guarantee my right to do so without risking losing my job or being fined or even sent to jail, but it *does* protect me against you being allowed to hit me.

So I'm afraid my sympathies are not with this man.

see, the thing about your post, i purposely stayed out of that side of the argument about violence, only speaking about the degradation this man experienced for too long, and responsibility of management.

you suggest that is a justification to violence. there is none. the abuse can be wrong. the violence can be wrong. without any contradiction

19. Because he's obviously obsessed with the size (or lack thereof) of his
genitalia.

See, what most guys do if someone makes a wisecrack about their genitalia is say "fuck you" and get on with their life, regardless of how often it occurs.

This guy obviously had some kind of hang up where he felt his masculinity was threatened.

If you can't understand that, that's your failure, not mine.

Suing wouldn't have resolved his moronic inner need to prove his machismo.

Anyway, no, what I'm saying is that only a macho mentality would chose to take physical action instead of doing what the rest of humanity knows to be the appropriate reaction.

26. It's more that his coworkers were obsessed with ribbing him about it
Sure, he could say 'fuck you' or 'your wife liked it' or any of the smack talk that men employ in verbal roughhousing. But he shouldn't have had to put up with that in the first place. His supervisor, who led in the mockery, is at fault for creating a hostile work environment and misusing his authority to make fun of an employee, and encourage other staff members to do the same, instead of setting an example of maturity and respect.

The guy certainly overreacted by responding violently - that isn't acceptable either. But he can argue that he snapped under the ongoing strain - it's not as if there were a brief joking session and he kept bringing the subject up over and over to demand an apology, it was his coworkers who kept reminding him.

That kind of behavior is just not acceptable in the workplace, any more than it would be acceptable to make jokes about the size of a woman's bust or hips, or pregnancy or any other personal characteristic. Everyone has a right to be treated respectfully by their co-workers - not to have their ego reinforced, but not to have it attacked either. We wouldn't accept someone being mocked because of a disability, being abnormally fat or thin, or short, or deformed in some way. There's no reason to accept someone having their genitalia mocked either.

you can laugh at this guy, but would it be acceptable for TSA staff to make jokes about airline passengers based on these body scans? Would you be happy if you or a female partner were traveling and overheard a security staffer some aspect of your body they had seen on a scan? Hell no, I'm guessing. Now imagine if you regularly ran into the same people and they made the same unacceptable jokes every damn time you met them...I think your 'who cares' attitude would quickly evaporate.

Even you here are making a joke of the guys 'size (or lack thereof)'. Surely, being a man yourself, you are aware that penis size at rest has nothing to do with sexual characteristics. Pretty much all guys' genitalia will shrink when the weather is cold or they're in a swimming pool. Some men have a penis that stays the same size most of the time, and just 'stands up' when they have sex. Other men have a small one that grows when it's time for some fun. In other words, a show-er or a grow-er. The former is more common; men in the latter group experience a bigger increases in size during sexual activity. There's no statistical difference between the two groups as far as erections go - that is, flaccid size is useless a predictor of erection size, except for the very small number of men who have 'micro penises' due to hormonal condition prior to birth.

(Interestingly, gay men have a slightly bigger average size when erect than straight men (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10410197 self-reported, but other evidence suggests men of both orientations exaggerate or underestimate by the same amount compared to actual measurements). Nobody knows why, for the same reason nobody knows why people are gay. If there's a chemical or hormonal basis to being gay, maybe the same factor influences sexual orientation and penis size; or maybe it's psychological, and men with a big penis are more likely to develop an interest in others' penises. Or perhaps they're more likely to attract sexual interest from other males during sexual development. Nobody is really sure.)

If you can't understand that, that's your failure, not mine.

You should rethink this attitude. first, it's not cool to pick on someone for something that they have no control over, like the shape of their body. Second, to claim that someone is 'obsessed' because they take offense or lose patience with being picked on is basically blaming the victim of harassment for their refusal to just grin and bear it. This is exactly the mentality displayed by bullies when they are called on their behavior, to blame the person who is being bullied for daring to assert themselves. If you think the guy's is 'moronic' and has a 'need to prove his machismo', what about the supervisor a co-workers who apparently felt the need to repeatedly mock him?

I don't believe that people should be thin-skinned or too quick to take offense. There's no constitutional right to be taken seriously at all times, and sometimes people make a big fuss out of something when they should just put their big boy or girl pants on and deal with it. I'm skinny and have ginger hair and thick glasses, that makes me fit the nerd stereotype real well - I expect to get ribbed about it from time to time and if the joke is made in a friendly spirit I'll even find it funny. But there's a big difference between being able to laugh at oneself and being a punchbag for other people.

50. First, I never said it was cool to pick on anyone, second I never justified the coworkers actions
What I said was that this mans choice to become physically violent instead of pursuing an appropriate course of action is indicative of his overly developed sense of machismo.

Think about it, of all the people you know, who is more likely to react violently to such treatment by co-workers? A more relaxed person who is perfectly comfortable in their sexuality, or the typical overly macho male who thinks that to ridicule his penis is to ridicule his entire reason for existing?

The FACT is that the type of person who reacts violently to such things is exactly as I described, they suffer from an inferiority complex and believe that they must prove themselves when challenged. Complaining to management and/or filing a law suit doesn't fit that criteria.

What I said was that this type of person would not sue because it doesn't fit his macho mentality.

If he didn't have such a BS macho mentality, he would have taken the appropriate action pursuant to the harrassment polices of the company and if that didn't work, he would have filed suit.

18. If they're sisters, they do....
True story:

My sister is nine years older than me. She and I have totally opposite looks besides our height and shoe size (we're actually half-sisters). She's dark haired, green eyed, olive skin -- I'm a brown-eyed ginger. She was so excited when she decided to wear the same size 1 wedding dress from when she was 18 to her second wedding (the first only lasted for a few months and she'd kept the dress) that they had to let out the bust an inch -- she's an A cup but has an ass to kill for. I'm plump and have a case of the gone-ass, and am a DDD.

So when I was almost 14 and had to go buy new bras since I'd gotten to a D cup, she was over at our house. I was already self-conscious about being so large-chested. As I was taking off the tags and putting them in my underwear drawer, she said "Where on earth do you get those over-the-shoulder boulder holders?"

I fired back with: "Oh, these? They're easy to find. What I'd like to know is where you find those black lace training bras."

She got really pissed off for about three seconds, then blushed and said "I guess I deserved that for teasing you."

We're good friends, despite our age difference. :)

23. Hahahahahah
You can't be serious...

Women are FAR, FAR worse than men when it comes to ridiculing each other for their physical traits. I watch it happen all day at my office.

"Did you see what she was wearing?"
"Did you see how she has her hair?"
"Did you see how she's got her nails painted?"

Of course, a lot of it has to do with how the ridiculing is done. From what the women in my life tell me, it's a lot more psychological and systematic.

56. I am from a different generation ( 80 years old) so perhaps you
are right. I have noticed that many modern young women have lost many of the basic ideas of femininity such as kindness, respect, and modesty. I have always been a champion of women's rights, however, however many women have taken their rights and become self-obsessed and bullish in the process. To me it is sad that women feel they must become agressive about their physical appearance, treatment of others etc. to gain what they feel will gain some sort of superiority or respect.
Perhaps some men appreciate this in women, but the young men I know ridicule these traits.

61. Yes, I can believe you could be right. Women of my 80's
generation rarely ridiculed other women only if they were considered whores or slatterns in some sense. That generation was not particularly interested in breast size or obtaining what is considered these days, the perfect body. Time and money was spent furthuring education, careers and family. My social circle consists of a mixed bag of different ages. Fortunately I am not privy to catty gossip about the 'flaws' of other women, perhaps due to my age difference.
Never-the-less, I do not believe fake boobs, hair extensions, butt implants and other extraneous accouterments make the woman ideal. Perhaps something else is missing.

12. What he did was wrong...
He should not have lost his tempter; he should not have used violence. It is not justified, and he will be properly punished for assault. However, I can't see how he was the bully in this case. He snapped because he was bullied.

Our society is obsessed with stupid bullshit like penis size, height, breast size, etc. There's a reason why the internet is filled with advertisements for enlargement pills (that don't work) and surgeries (that can leave you mutilated and may not work). In a lot of (stupid, mostly male) minds, it's perfectly acceptable to belittle another man because of genetically predetermined traits like this. And surprise, some guys can't take the prodding forever.

And hey, imagine all of the oversized SUVs that guys wouldn't buy if society didn't tell them that this kind of macho bullshit matters.

Boy howdy, -- That is quite an "Oh Shit" -- if he's that concerned about his wang size..

I'll bet he really regrets his violent reaction. Time to consider anger management.
