Pelosi Statement on President Obama’s Nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan for Supreme Court

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan by President Obama to serve as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court:

“With the nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to be an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, President Obama has chosen a candidate who will protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Solicitor General Kagan's outstanding service as a lawyer, professor, public servant, and administrator prepares her for this challenge, and she will come to the bench with a deep knowledge of the law and respect for all individuals.

"If confirmed, Elena Kagan's appointment will mean that for the first time in history, three women will sit on the bench of the Supreme Court.

"I look forward to Elena Kagan's timely confirmation by the United States Senate."
