This is a left wing liberal thread! |
|
Now that we have ascertained that there is a whole bunch of us, what do you want your protest sign to say?
On mine, one side says simply
Stop with all this stupid war shit.
The other side says,
THAT'S the healthcare plan? It's ready to be tweeked, NOW.

I consider myself a "left wing liberal".. . most of my rw family (sibs/cousins) thinks I'm way way way WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY left!
But I'll guarandamntee you there are people here on DU that question my "leftness" on some issues.
I think I'm a left left lefty.... but I probably disagree on some (pick any) "issue" with just about every damn poster on DU.
We're not lock-step mindless drones. . .
To me, things are - complicated. And sometimes the "best guess scenario" available at the point in time with the resources and information available, is just the best damn thing you can do.

12. That makes a whole lot of sense. Are you sure that's allowed? |
|
Sometimes "the best damn thing you can do" is simply watch, listen and wait. It may be frustrating not to be able to announce "the answer", but precious few of us actually know it all. We can offer our thoughts and our opinions, but not the Gospel of Liberal Thought by Which All Are to be Measured.

14. I posted this on that "other" thread, you know the one, really long, and... |
|
I suspect it got lost among the 665 or so other posts on that thread.
I don't believe in the political spectrum, at least not as applied to individuals. The political spectrum is a construct. It's a mechanism to study political beliefs on a macro level. Most individuals hold opinions which would place them at multiple points on the line. And then the line itself isn't complete; one can be libertarian or statist as a liberal, and one can be a statist or a libertarian as a conservative. Some people use an X and Y axis to describe their opinion in a political graph, instead of just assuming a point on a line.
I don't like being told that a line has been constructed, and that I belong somewhere on this line. I don't like that a bit.
Now, I'm for rational thought. I'm for government that works. I'm for freedom and regulated markets. All that puts me on the left. And I see a federal budget which is about 1/4 of the national GDP and I'm horrified. I'm for a very strong defense and spending a lot of money on defense, as much as necessary. I'm for kicking ass internationally if necessary (admittedly, it's rarely necessary). And that stuff supposedly puts me on the right. Some would say holding these disparate views makes me a moderate, and I do believe in moderation, especially in government. But I hold no centrist views at all.
See the line? Get on that line! I get to choose my place on that line - is this supposed to convince me I'm free?
I'm a Democrat and fiercely for rational thought. That makes me as a liberal, I suppose; when I don't feel much like talking about it I just describe myself as a liberal. I probably hold more "left" views than "right" views. I'm just weary of being told I have to choose a place on an imaginary line which is used to control us.
Doesn't anyone else know the difference between choice and freedom? We've been given choice, and it has fooled us. Choose your camp; expect the others in your camp to want to oust you for any disagreement, though. It's gotten so that even in debating the issues among ourselves we are inclined to be careful to not express an opinion which might be unpopular; one is guaranteed to be flamed in response.
I think this spectrum they use is denying our freedom. I really do. And on the one thread on which I've posted which has been seen by thousands, it got skipped over entirely!

On and off for the past 6 years, I have stood on a corner protesting wars for 2 hours on Fridays.
The anti-nuke peace symbol seems to be the best sign I can hold.
Words are hard for people to read when they are driving by.
"Health care Not Warfare" seems about the limit that can be really read in a drive by.
If you go to a big protest event and create signs that may be photographed, make sure you spell your
words correctly. :yourock:
