SOMALIA: Russia executed all Somali pirates – spokesman
BOSASSO (Somalilandpress) — A pirate spokesman, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted Somalilandpress today said at least ten of his men were executed by the Russian navy after the troopers stormed MV Moscow University.

“The Russians commandos stormed the ship before sunrise, starting a firefight with our men, onboard they injured three of them and one was killed,” he said.

He dismissed the Russian navy statement that the men were released because of “the absence of a legal base to carry out prosecution procedures against pirates”.

“The Russians never released the young men instead they shot them point-blank range then loaded their lifeless bodies back on the boat,” he added.

The spokesman condemned the action of the Russian navy “our men never hurt their hostages, we simply want foreign ships to stop overfishing in our waters, if they are not happy to respect our-fishermen and their livelihood, we have no choice but to take hostage to compensate for the losses,” he cited.

15. The pirates attacked a crude oil tanker,
and intended to hold it for ransom to get easy money. It had nothing to do with over-fishing -- that's just a cheap-jack excuse by the hijackers to garner sympathy for their criminal activities.

19. So if someone robs you then it is ok for your to rob me?
How about they direct all their ship storming and weapons skills against the "illegal fishing operations". Sink, burn, scuttle (after unloading all the fish) a couple dozen fishing boats and the ROI on that illegal fishing goes way down.

These are just a bunch of thugs who figured out an easy payday is to hijack an oil tanker. The sad thing is it isn't even for the crews. The oil companies pay a couple million because the tank and it's cargo is worth $5 billion plus.

21. Sure it is
And if they were confronting, hijacking, and shooting at pirate fisherman, they'd have a point. But they're not. They're sailing hundreds of miles out into international waters, or the waters of other countries. Once there, they're hijacking and kidnapping the crews of cargo ships, pleasure vessels, and research craft...and even fisherman from other countries fishing in their own nations home waters...dragging them back to Somalia, and demanding huge cash payouts. Their claim has nothing to do with their actions.

Besides, I was reading a couple of months ago about how the continued claim is bunk anyway. Their argument may have been truthful ten years ago when Somali piracy got into full swing, but it hasn't been an issue for years and Somali fishermen today are hauling in record catches. Why? Because the pirates scared all of the overseas trawlers away. Modern piracy has nothing to do with fishing, and everything to do with the roughly $150 million a year that we've been paying as bounties recently.

52. A Russian tanker in international waters is catching Somalian fish?
Uh, OK....

If the pirates were interested in catching poachers, they should attack the poaching vessels. Their excuse falls flat when they attack merchant shipping and yachts operating far from the Somalian coast.

34. Or, it will turn the pirates violent towards their captives.

Heretofore, the pirates have been rather scrupulous about keeping their captives alive.

They will no doubt figure that, to keep their game going, the west needs to see that if we kill Somalies, those Somalies will not die alone.

Someone in a post below sarcastically said "piracy isn't some gentleman's agreement"... but indeed that is exactly what it's been for several years running.

39. If they start that
then the naval powers will attack the pirate bases. The pirates know this and act accordingly. They are pragmatic enough to understand sometimes they're gonna get shot playing this game, but the payday - which can be QUITE lucrative - is worth the risk.

8. In other news...
Russians kill three said to be connected to subway bombings

<snip>

"Security services killed three people involved in the suicide attacks on the Moscow metro in March after they refused to surrender, Russia’s security chief said on Thursday.

Two female suicide bombers, who officials say were natives of Russia’s North Caucasus region of Dagestan, blew themselves up at two central underground stations, killing 40 people.

Alexander Bortnikov, head of the FSB domestic security service, said secret agents had tracked down three gang members, including one who escorted the suicide bombers to Moscow and another one who led the women to the scene.

"To our great regret, we did not manage to seize them alive,” Russian channels showed Mr. Bortnikov reporting to President Dmitry Medvedev. “They put on stiff armed resistance and were destroyed."

Edited on Thu May-13-10 02:45 PM by Statistical
“The Russians never released the young men instead they shot them point-blank range then loaded their lifeless bodies back on the boat,”

So if the only people who were there are either Russian or dead how is he able to make this claim?

“our men never hurt their hostages, we simply want foreign ships to stop overfishing in our waters, if they are not happy to respect our-fishermen and their livelihood, we have no choice but to take hostage to compensate for the losses,”

Why not pirate the illegal fishing boats. I mean if you got guns and are willing to use them and you have skills at boarding ships wouldn't the logical conclusion be to pirate fishing boats. Hell a 50/50 mix of piracy and just direct destruction of illegal fishing boats might actually make that stop. Instead they steal from cargo ships who have nothing to do with the fishing.

Anyways no sympathy.

20. File this under "duh!"
I object to the killing but come on, take a Russian ship and expect them to pay a ransom? They would just as assume to blow the whole ship out of the water.

At best, if they were indeed tried in Russian Federation Courts they were likely to sentenced to prison in Siberia with a wonderful view of the Arctic Sea along with prison duties (hard labor). None of them would have survived to serve out their full sentences.

Maybe the EU or some other entity warned Russia stating that they would check to see that they were treated humanely. And the "problems of legal prosecution" became, "we'll save you the trouble of that".

28. "we have no choice"
those words should be banned from human language.

What does this idiot think hostage means? There are only two outcomes for an intractable hostage situation: you either survive or you don't regardless of what ransom does or does not change hands.

Piracy is not a gentlemen's agreement about legal nuances. Piracy IS exactly the reason for navies to begin with:

Navies exist to protect maritime commerce. I believe that is what they were doing in this case, reclaiming a sovereign merchant interest that was stolen by a bunch of thugs who claimed they "had no choice".
