The Tea Party ---Steeped in anger, its members live in a world of paranoia and rumor

Here is an editorial on the recent losses of civil rights leaders, and the phenomenon and relevance/irrelevance of the Tea Party and its members, in the writer's look at the goings on around us in the America of today.
It is written by one of my very favorite NC columnists ever, who I have always thought of as a man of deep thought and wonderful insights.

Hal Crowther

5. ...
I apologize if I sounded haughty.
I should have said : "I don't know how to give you snippets of this"

I really did not.

8. Fucking A
I don't know, though...the anger's got some serious competition, what with the frustration and despair.

Please keep posting these links.

I'm a long-time member of a very fine on-line forum which has recently been subject to a few members who just post right-wing tracts in the "chat" thread.

I'll be posting a lot of this beautifully written article, just to even out the discussion and keep our entire forum from looking as if we are all right-wing extremists.

It is a real shame ...

So, thanks for the unwitting help!

How the teabaggers proved the author's points one by one in the comments.

14. this piece explains the whole situation
One thing I have been saying. The red states are tearing down education. I have said it and said it. Why because they want to dumb down the population and they want to re-educate students to the republican way of thinking. I think this is dangerous. Remember Hitler and his youth groups. That is what is going to happen here. If the republicans get a majority in November this country as we know it will cease to exist.

promised to fix the public schools - he is firing teachers and cut the schools budget by millions of dollars. The right HATES education that goes beyond job prep...anything teaching people how to think they want to destroy.

18. I think there's even more to it
They hate people getting anything "for free." I'm convinced they want a system where anyone who wants their children to get an education has to pay for it. They'll eventually have us paying corporations for clean water, police protection, etc.

They hate the fact that teaching has, for the last several generations, provided a path from the working class to the middle class for 1000s of people. When they finish with their privatization of the schools, teaching will be on a par with non-professional jobs.

17. Thank you and all others
who are responding so positively.
I have read Hal Crowther's work for so long that he taught me the phrase, "...not being gifted with a discernible learning curve" when he was writing an op-ed about Jesse Helms. This happened at a time when I was struggling to learn the finer points of English as my second language.

Isn't it funny, the things we remember...
