BOP's, another approach.... what if.... blow out preventers...
were powered by the same force they are meant to control? What if the pressure coming out of the well was the same pressure that turned mechanisms that would shut down the flow? When a fighter jet lost hydraulics back in the day, a small air driven hydraulic motor could be deployed so that the forward motion of the jet spun the vanes to provide several thousand psi for the landing gear and most likely attitude control... personally, I would put a pump on the BOP that would be driven by the oil and gas pressure to operate the BOP... it would be pretty damn fail safe when the pressure you want to stop is the pressure that runs your gear.
