I'm an atheist who has voted, and will vote, for theists
I wish I could vote for someone who is an atheist, but until one comes along in my voting district, I will continue to vote for theists.

Any questions?

2. Atheist are, for the most part, disallowed from running for offices
or teaching in America. That not only is in violation of the Constitution, it deprives America of some if its most qualified people. This is a practice that will never be abandoned within any of our lifetimes.

6. Open atheists you mean.
There are many atheists who teach and I'm sure quite a few in public office, they just aren't vocal about their views. I disagree with you on one thing though, I think we will see a change in our lifetimes, much more acceptance of atheists in the public arena in the next few decades, that is the trend.

13. I remember when President Obama mentioned us in his inauguration speech
When he said that Americans are of any religions and no religions, I actually started to cry. Well, I was already tearing up, but the simple fact that the President ADMITTED WE CAN BE GOOD AMERICANS really meant a lot to me. The outrage from the Freeps and other crypto-fascists wasn't unexpected, but it underlines the fact that such a small thing is really a big deal. And that, in the 21st century, is really quite sad.

12. We sure are
Right now, there's only one out atheist in Congress, and that's Pete Stark from California. And recently, in Asheville, NC, when Cecil Bothwell, an atheist was elected to the city council, local theists, including the former president of the NAACP filed suit to keep him out of office, citing North Carolina's law barring atheists from office. It's time for atheists to stand up and fight.

3. You are so brave to admit this on DU! Vote for a theist (gasp!)???111!!11
:sarcasm:

What's bizarre is that I really, really like the OP of the post you are riffing on, (and I assume this thread will be taken down by the mods soon because it's a riff....).

So why the need to publicly proclaim you'd vote for an atheist....

Sigh. It's just really sad.

4. I base my vote for a candidate on his/her politics.
His/her personal life, religious beliefs, hobbies, sexual preferences, place of birth, etc are all irrelevant. I'm an atheist, and that also is irrelevant to my political beliefs.

7. MY words exactly. I don't know why anything else would matter, in
this case, except his/her politics.

5. I'm agnostic and vote for people of faith, but I draw the line at the ones that talk to God
I would prefer that I have no real idea what someone's religious beliefs are, but the fact that someone has religion is fine. I must admit, however, that being Rapture-ready would always be a deal breaker for me.

9. Why do the atheists(?) on this board find it so necessary to draw attention to themselves.

11. I think atheist politicians would be more "big picture" and serious about government. No sell outs.
Also, term limits for reps is crucial.

16. I'm curious as to what prompted this need to announce something that most of us...
... have been doing for as long as there have been elections.

Doubtless there's a small absolutist faction as with anything, but the vast majority of atheists manage to do just what you said in every single election.

What prompted this particular proclamation?

17. I'm an atheist and I vote for theists
Democratic theists in particular. They tend to avoid the religious craziness that was a hallmark of the Bush administration and republicans in general. It still doesn't change my continued outrage at the lack of atheist representation and the religious bigotry in shows.
