So, I'm listening to this blond guy
as he's defending/explaining Arizona'a decision to eliminate Ethnic Studies programs from their schools. It was a bit difficult, as my ears were picking up noise but very little sense was coming through. I was tempted (as Mrs. Slocombe used to say) to "twiddle his knobs" in an effort to get better reception.

Anyway, he seemed to be suggesting that Ethnic Studies are divisive and dangerous. You know, like African Studies would make you an African. Uh huh. I was trying to follow him, but had to quit when I caught myself trying to imagine what I would become if I studied Zoology. That said, using his line of logic I think it's safe to assume that he studied proctology.

1. Wow, Arizona's Republican leadership is just on a roll.
They really want to disenfranchise the minority vote, don't they?

3. From the blonde guys perspective
the only history that is worth studying is the history of the white males. Anything else is irrelevant.

It's pretty pathetic. Knowledge and education can bring understanding and bridge a lot of gulfs. But that might interfer with blonde guy's sense of white priviledge.

10. You are hitting the nail on the head................
This ban against ethnic studies is an attempt to gloss over the history of white privilege in US culture.

5. What's weird is KO reported tonight that the RNC has decided to
not hold the next Republican Convention in Phoenix. They claim it has nothing to do with the new laws.

WIERD.

23. I don't think it has anything to do with that. People will go to various
conventions in Las Vegas in August. Both places are well air-conditioned through the summer.

Maybe you're right, Cleita. The RNC is between their funders and their base. I love it.

7. In New Mexico a blond guy is a huero--not a derogative term.
It's actually a somewhat affectionate term in New Mexico. I would be considered a huera, but I'm getting gray.

I'm so glad that most of us in the southwest don't see things in terms of black or white, blond/blonde or not. Cultural anthropology, where I teach, is still alive and well.

I don't know what sensational media you've gleaned this from (since most of the media seem to be that way currently), but I can assure you that from where I sit, blond guys are not necessarily bad guys. ;-)

12. The 'blond guy' could be my brother,
in fact he bears some resemblance to one of my siblings. His opponent in the argument was a clearly aghast gentleman who has likely been on the receiving end of this kind of thing his whole life. The blond fellow was spewing the kind of nonsense one would expect to hear from just about any supremacist group, while his opponent would never ever be considered for membership in such organizations. Since I resemble the spewer I have been approached with hideous commentary that I was assumed to agree with. For the record, some of my best friends are blond guys.

Lived in NM for a number of years, loved it. Hope to attend my 50th HS reunion in Albuquerque if I live that long. I'd move back in a heartbeat, but I have all my doctors well trained and they insist on living here. So.

I'm blonde. I'm not dissing blonds or blondes. I am most certainly dissing the commentary from the idiot who believes his 'blondness' renders him superior.

20. I'll give this one more try.
"Hello, Central Casting?"

"Yes, what can we do for you?"

"We need a guy to deliver some lines out of the Aryan playbook."

"We can send someone over."

"This ain't a Mel Brooks thing, the guy has to look the part or the lines won't work."

"Fine. What look are you going for?"

"How about David Niven with peroxide. And no accent."

"Can do. He'll be there in ten minutes."

19. I love New Mexico too.
I love my students' names, like Sean Garcia and Heather Juarez (these are fabricated, but you get the idea). The weather is so unpredictable, and we have such beautiful mountains. Fishing in what little water we have is a real sport; I have letters from my grandfather talking about that.

31. Where I lived up near Taos, our neighbors' families had come from Spain in the 16th century
Just like Australians, sort of, out of jails and scandals they came to the Americas to make their

fortunes. Some even spoke Spanish with the Castillian lisp.

8. No history of white people oppressing other races/places allowed.!!!
White history from a White Christian prospective only damn it! Few years max= save old schoolbooks now for the future esp. ethnic studies. Don't rely on the internet to preserve.
Buy your friend a brown shirt soon! Can't wait 'til they take the Holocaust out of WWll history. Now what was the civil war about?
I have a child so it's not funny in the least that this new moron majority is restricting her knowledge with a 'one view' world!

yes, it was just as "dangerous" to allow Cherokee, Lakota, Iroquois kids to speak their native tongues or practice their traditional spirituality.

We should lose all knowledge of everything except White Caucasian-ness. Nothing else matters...
