I got a job!

Today I started my new job. I do prepress work for four daily newspapers in North Idaho and one daily in Washington State. The pay's good, the working conditions are very good, the equipment is new enough parts aren't falling off it (and they put money into it, something that didn't happen in North Carolina), the plant is ventilated!, and our very Republican owner maintains a hands-off attitude. There is a Republican tone to the (very infrequent) editorial page, but there'd have to be--this is a very Republican area. We don't run Mallard Fillmore, Prickly City or Thomas Sowell, and that's good enough for me.

You'll enjoy this: Last week I was reading the paper and noticed something about the LTTEs: they're all about immigration and they're all "the only thing you've got to do is to turn America into a dictatorship." One person even suggested forcing all Americans to carry passports at all times. Yes, I heard "Ihre Papiere, bitte!" as I read that, so I took mouse in hand and wrote an LTTE of my own: the only way you're going to stop illegal immigration is to make it very painful to employ an illegal immigrant. We're talking fines, jail terms and forced sale of businesses. I met the managing editor of the paper today. He liked the letter a lot.

Great anecdote! I'm seeing more of this, little by little, around here - and in our neighborhood an occasional "Help Wanted" sign in the shop windows. I think the recovery is taking hold!
