72% of House Republican Conference Vote Against Resolution Honoring AmeriCorps

by Andre Walker, Fri May 14, 2010 at 08:18:36 AM EDT

snip//

AmeriCorps is like a domestic Peace Corps. It allows Americans to give back to their community, serve those in need and make a dramatic impact upon the world they live in. AmeriCorps is a program worthy of recognition by the United States Congress.

Unfortunately, 128 Republican members of Congress --72% of their caucus-- voted against a resolution that simply says we salute AmeriCorps; we acknowledge the accomplishments of AmeriCorps; and we recognize the contributions of AmeriCorps {SOURCE: House Roll Call 271}.

It is difficult for me, as a former AmeriCorps member, to understand why 72% of the House Republican Conference voted "No" on a resolution that spends no money, raises no taxes and increases no government. AmeriCorps promotes service in our community.

What the hell are these guys thinking voting against that?

Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe there's some controversial language hidden in the AmeriCorps resolution. Here's the link to House Resolution 1338. Maybe y'all can find the objectionable material that caused 72% of House Republicans to vote against honoring AmeriCorps, because I'm just not seeing it.

5. Wait until wall street creates some tools that harness cash from this service.
Then, and only then will, the Republicans be interested in this service.

7. And isn't that a sad commentary. I also don't understand what
their reasoning is. Not a clue.

8. Their rationale: Planned Parenthood and ACORN! (booga booga!)
Edited on Fri May-14-10 11:01 AM by NYC Liberal
Members maybe concerned that H.Res. 1338 is at least the 8th Americorps resolution in this Congress. Some Members are concerned that AmeriCorps volunteers are currently employed (and recruited) by community organizations including Planned Parenthood. Members have expressed concern that federal funding should not support "volunteers" to be paid to work for abortion providers and grant them further flexibility with their finances and resources (given that money is fungible). For a recent example of an AmeriCorps job opportunity at a Planned Parenthood, click here. These Members are also concerned that without the proper safeguards, opportunities for community service participants to engage in activities that many find inappropriate (i.e. ACORN, Planned Parenthood) could become more commonplace under the Obama Administration.
