Boarded up businesses - Wiernerschnitzel and Quiznos
Busy area of Los Angeles, I was surprised to see 2 businesses had closed. The Wiernershnitzel has been there for decades. Quiznos is a newer business. The recession continues.

Any businesses closing near you?

1. small town, but many of them are gone
lots of empty storefronts. condos sitting empty, all construction stopped (which I dont mind). loads of empty homes and foreclosure signs.

the only stores left in town are cheap tourist crap. fudge shoppes and T shirts.

of course, walmart is doing booming business, as are the dollar stores.

4. It's strange to see windows boarded with wood in los angeles. that was rarely seen
in the past because new businessed moved in immediately. Now, you can see boarded windows even in West LA.

2. All the time
When you see a closed Quizno's (we have one in this town too), you are seeing an entrepreneur who blew his savings and must return to the ranks of being an employee. One thing you can count on, while he was open, he was paying tribute franchise fees to corporate for all the valuable marketing they provided to make his business a success. Funny, you don't see as many mom&pop places folding as you do franchises.

5. Quiznos are more expensive than Subways, seem to be struggling more
Subway dropped their prices with the downturn in the economy. Yes,I'm sure someone lost their shirt with the Quizno closing

9. Franchise restaurants have a high failure rate.
Most likely, the Weinerschnitzel was sold to a new owner within the past couple of years.

They go bankrupt all the time even in the best of economic times.

12. A couple of closings, but more new openings
Which is a welcome surprise. Scandinavian Ice, a shave-ice and ice cream store that had been here for 20 years, closed down, but there is a new one in its place already and three new restaurants just popped up on the main drag (Alii).

Not to be unfashionably optimistic, but things have been looking up for us economically.

13. I was actually thinking about opening a new restaurant with OPM
One of these:

http://www.dog-n-suds.com/

I used to work at one when I was about 14. I love their food. It was always the best fast food around. Every time I drive down to Indianapolis to visit friends there I always stop at one of the last two Dog 'n Suds in Lafaette, Indiana to eat. Now I see there are more opening up. :)

I was thinking about acquiring the old drive-in that I worked at more than 40 years ago that is currently a restaurant which specializes in Gyros.

I thought it over and I think I am too old and couldn't take the stress or want the headaches.

So I shit canned that idea.

I wish someone else would do it though. I sure could go for a large root beer, Texas Burger sandwich, a Coney dog and an order of onion rings right about now.
